Mondeo V6 and Vectra V6 - comparisons please
Has anyone ever drove both these cars.
what are the performance comparisons torque etc. and handling
They seem to be absolute performance bargains these days.

Well the vectra always gets slated, and for a good reason too! the mondeo is a nicer car to drive and own, though 3bhp down on power (167bhp v 170bhp) not much in it though on the road performance wise.

I have had both, and also driven both in anger at work (Police).
Both have their merits in my opinion.
The Vectra has a stonking engine with quite a bit of torque and a high top speed (150 ish),but it is flawed in that the gearbox is terrible and very imprecise and it has a terrible tendency to understeer especially if it is a touch damp. The chassis is not in my opinion as well balanced as it might be.
Also the traction control can activate even if turned off which becomes very annoying. It is still a fab car for the money though.
The Mondeo would be my personal choice especially an ST24 or ST200. They are a little down on top speed on the Vectra (135/140 ish) but the gearbox is far more precise with well thought out ratios and a slick change.Bags of torque and the chassis is far superior with less tendency to understeer and a much more balanced and confidence inspiring ride,if a little hard.
Get the steering geometry sorted and it should dial out most of the little understeer there is.
That is simply my opinion and i will stand corrected by anyone who knows better.I was so impressed with both in my time that i bought them and really enjoyed them.
You can't really go wrong for little money,in the right hands in real world road driving conditions they will live with a Scoob.
Hope this helps a bit.

One very relevant phrase:
Group 15 insurance.
But it's not like owning a Subaru, I'm sure....

I've had an ST220 for nearly two years now and can only praise it! It's quick enough, has a great sounding engine, and every toy imaginable. It'll do the Nordschleife in under nine minutes as well.

Great fast car with more toys than an Ann Summers shop and a pleasure to own but at nearly 100k things were starting to go expensively wrong. I bought her at 60k and straight away spent nearly 1k on new wishbones as the bushes were shot as well as cv joints... these always need replacing post 50k so budget for it. Parts are a good price though as it's a Ford... well woth considering...
Handling wise... never really inpired confidence in anything other than a straight line... too much roll and always felt a little 'loose' going into a bend... Bear in mind though theses things were designed to be motorway mile munchers.... a trait supported by the lack of engine/wind/road noise etc... at motorway speeds.. very cosy and peacefull.
Only went as it was time to get a brand spanker and at 16.3 k for my EU import WRX I just had to do it.

I've had both vectra's and mondeo's I've currently got a 99 st24 and trust me it's rapid enough for everyday driving! handles well enough and is comfy on the motorway's!! i've had vectra v6's and it's a stonking engine but flawed by it's chasis and gearbox. the interior is also much nicer on the mondeo!! absolute steal of a car not bad econemy with the mondeo either whilst the vectras seems much more thirtsy!! good luck...

I had an M plate mk1 Mondeo V6 a few years aog, I bought it at 3 years old with 100,000 miles on, and over 3.5 years and about 35,000 miles, I have to say it was the cheapest car to run I've had, though that was helped because I used to service it myself. In the time I had it, it needed a new battery (£40ish), part of a CV joint (£12), and I think i put a new water pump on it (can't remember how much).

I've also had both.
The Vectra has the better engine it's slightly more powerfull with better midrange. From then on the Vectra is poor, the gearbox is sloppy, the handling is understeer city and the steering has no feel.
The Mondeo is a far better car, you have to rev the engine a little more but the gearbox is slick, all the controls feel nicely weighted, the steering has lots of feedback and the handling is excellent for a front heavy FWD car.
I also found the Mondeo more economical, on an A road run mid 30's mpg was easy and I even achieved 40mpg on a 80mile A road run to the coast (Sat at 50-60mph in traffic)
Cheers
