Question American Fuel?

Im not exactly sure where to put this thread but i hope its OK to put it here...

Whats the difference between US and EU fuel "octane rating"? Or is it the same? Lets say theres a US-made car with recommended 87RON fuel - what fuel should i fill it with? Is 91RON (its closest to 87RON and its lowest-octane fuel i can get in my country) good or do they have different fuel in USA?

No they're not the same. I can't find a converter anymore but US fuel at 100 octane is lower than UK 100 octane. It's something like we use RON and they use the mean of RON and MON.

Nope. American 93 octane is roughly equivalent to UK 98 octane (also known as optimax...lol)

US fuel is the averaage of the MON and RON usually about 95 and 85 respectivly. (95+85)/2 = 90 so in the US our 95 standard would actually be around 90 octane. As mentioned about Optiplop is about 98 RON and 87.5 MON equivelent to US 93 octane.

MON seems to be a slightly better way of describing fuels ability to resist pre ignition at normal engine running speeds.

I would imagine the US 100 stuff is the 105 Race stuff you can get in the UK?

Ooh..Interesting! Always wondered about that.. My Folks are out there and when I've filled up their cars (911 C4 Cab, Cooper S, 4.4 X5.. which all obviously run best on the hi octane stuff!) I've always been confused by the fact the "good stuff" out there seems to be 95 RON at best.
