Default Saxo VTS & 106 Gti Is there a difference???

Has anyone driven both these vehicles back to back and do they differ in any way i.e. performance and handling - also reliability issues as well and what can you pick them up for nowadays!

Thanks guys

The 106 GTI performs more linear than the VTS. (Had one for 3 years).
The seat space feels bigger in the back in the 106 due to how the seats are higher in the citroen than the pug.

The VTS seems to blast to 60mph but seems to do less in each gear than the 106. Basically same engine but different config.

The handling on the 106 GTI seemed a lot better than the VTS - I suspect it was a duff VTS that I tested tho as it wasn't much fun at all, whereas the 106gti was a hoot

I had a VTR and i can vouch for the handling being absolutly insane, but the latter saxo's were better becuase they had electronic steering which made a massive difference once you got used to it. But i still think the 106 is better.

if you go to the saxosportsclub forum and do a search i am sure this is a subject that has been covered lots !

Oh I think the 106 is better too. Certainly with the handling but i found the VTS 0-60 blast better than the 106 expecially the R reg and earlier. They were quicker than the later models.

They are both pretty much the same car. People always seem to lean towards the pug due to it's better looks and not so chavvy image but the VTS is just as good mechanically.

The VTS looks far, far better in my opinion It's also available is that stunning poseidon blue, which helps. There's ****-all between the handling out of the box but the VTS, as stated before, is faster to 60 because of it's gearing.

edited to add.. you get what you pay for. Prices are all over the place at the moment so shop around carefully.

I like them both but think the 106 GTI looks much better but then again the 106's are more expensive to buy then VTS's so it's a difficult choice.

There really is hardly any difference between the cars. Looks are subjective but I think the styling on the 106 is too skinny wiht the MKII VTS looking beefier with nicer alloys as well. Performance wise you can argue all day but race a vts vs a 106 GTI and there will not be any difference! Any advantage of 0.0001 of a second the vts has with its gearing is lost by the flapping of the wings of a butterfly. 106 GTI has a better image because a) its a pug b) its badged 'gti' and c) cause citroen sold loads of vts's with free insurance so they sold i) more of them ii) more of them to chavs! Flip side being the vts is cheaper. Handling on them is purely subjective, they will both lap a track in the hands of a good driver as quickly as each other and are utterly limpit like. The VTS is generally regarded as being a little more focused and a little less forgiving but it is also massively chuckable and adjustable if you know what you are doing.

Personally anyone in the market that has no preferance on looks or image should simply base their decisions on cost to buy and whether the particular car (i assume 2nd hand) they are looking at is suitable. It very unlikely you'd drive one and have any different an opinion of the other.

All that said, I thrashed a gti at crail by a MUCH greater margin in my scooby that I could beat vts's by.........so the saxo is faster

Personally I prefer the reg plate being on the hatch as in the VTS than on the bumper as in the GTi. Like SB said, looks are a subjective thing and also to be fair one day you'll see a hundred Saxos and no Pugs and the next vice versa.

I do 650 miles a week in mine and I rarely see either VTS's or 106GTi's but I do see a high percentage of VTR's amongst the Saxos whereas the Pugs all seem to be 1.1's.

I'd still say that prices are all over the place at the moment. You certainly wouldn't get my VTS for less than the price of a GTi. It's only those desperate to sell that are giving them away. Same with all 2nd hand cars at the moment.

They are very similar... both share a hell of a lot of common parts, they're practically the same car under the skin, but the VTS is marginally lighter, has slightly different gear ratio's and the suspension setup is slightly differerent.

There's so little difference between them!

No, they're both identical in the engine department, both use Magnetti Marelli injection!

Going off the manufacturers figures the 106 is slower, but this is due to the way Peugeot did their figures...

They test the cars in standard road spec, with a full tank of fuel, a driver & passenger and do 0-100kmh aka 0-62mph, hence the cr@p times for all the Pug models.

Look at independant tests and there's very little to seperate them!

Both are mid 7's 0-60mph

Not true...

106 GTi - 2nd gear = 8.3mph per 1000rpm

So, in 2nd gear @ 7300rpm (limiter) it can hit 60.59mph, so just scrapes it, but is obviously screwed for a 0-100kmh (62mph) time as they use on the continent!

The gearing is more evenly spaced on the 106 though, a better box IMO

The interior on the Saxo is cr@p IMO, and they don't get the lovely leather & alcantara seats either!

I had a 106 gti, and you cant say that 106 gti is faster then the VTS and vice versa, cause theres nothing in it, and its all down to drivers ability in a straight line, unless one of the cars had been tuned up, but standard you wont find anything in performance, and when i bought the 106 it was down to styling that made me choose it over the VTS, but both are awsome cars, wish i kept the little pug sometimes.

Ah the humble old 106 GTi brings back many a memory! Mine actualy started life as a Quiksilver but as time progressed it was soon boasting a VTS engine complete with some naughty cams, high comp pistons and trick ECU among many other bits... this is the only car that I have every truly modified, spedig in excess of 30k at the finish but that aside it was the most capable point-to-point car I have ever driven. At one stage just before I stuffed it, it had a full weld in roll-cage, Bilstein suspension and was rr'd in the region of 170bhp running 14s 1/4s at Crail raceway.

Unfortunatly I stufed it into a telegraph pole as the suspension wern't quite trick enough to glide me over a hump back bridge and round a shelf left hooker at close on 90mph, yes daft but I was 19 at the time! I spent another 6 months stripping the car and rebuilding it into a new shell complete with the Dimma wide arch kit for some reason I opted for 18" wheels and a leather interior??!! so within a month back on the road I pumped it and got a scooby whatever you do don't get larger than 15" wheels

Rich D is a name from the past on PGAC (i was Quickyilver) and Saxoboy used to have the droan of me rore past his house in the early hours back when he had is little black number VTS, I'm sure you remember?!

Go 106, end of.

Stages of it's life...

I know what you mean, stuck a nice set of 17"inch wheels on my pug, even though they looked nice they made the car slow and had trouble against a new shape beetle, had the car full at the time with all my mates laughing.

Ah, never realised who you were for a moment there! Have you moved out of Edinburgh? Did you ever get a scooby? Yeah I remember you GTI, changed every week I recall once when it was baged as a quicksilver I took it at face value and tried to catch up in the vts to lay down a spanking! Glad traffic was against me cause I later found you were running over 150bhp at that time with the VTS engine in and I'd have had my *** handed to me

Still miss the VTS a hell of a lot! Right now I'd be struggling to decide what I'd want to drive again first between my scooby and vts. I'd probably take the scooby simply for that turbo kick - missing that.
