Default £3k car choice?

Hi all.

Looks like a guy is buying my 200sx on tuesday, which is cool.
But that leaves me with a decision on what to get....

Im going to be doing some driving next year, France, Germany etc.. and want a car that will do the miles comfortably and reliably.
But for work, its only 6 miles on small roads.

Ive got about £3k to spend, so it doesnt give me a wide range of cars.

my list at the mo is;

Audi coupe 2.0
Audi A4 1.8
Audi A3
Alfa 156 2.0
Ford Focus
Pug 406

Im only 24, no kids etc, and its really only ever me and the GF in the car, so i dont need a massive car really.
So far the audi coupe is the best choice, and it looks cool
Id love a scoob, but we already have 2 in the family, lol

what does anyone else think?

cheers

Tony

I dont think you can get a 318is for 3k?..maybe a 318i

If you can cope with the image of a Scooby, espcially now the "classics" have dropped into the price range of the chavs, you can live with the image of a beemer?

If you want the miles to pass in comfort with reliability, maybe a BM(320 upwards) would be a good choice for those european trips?

Sad as it sounds but you can get a well spec'd Vauxhall Omega 3.0 for that. RWD etc etc 220bhp and leather, climate, top notch stereo.

Go for the Elite model for comfort or the MV6 is more sporty.

I KNOW it's a vauxhall but this is one car and one engine that won't let you down.

Jon.

Audi A3 or A4. Very good cars, at what they are intended for.

I'd take an S14 200SX over any of your potential replacements.

But I guess that's not really the answer you were looking for!

audi A4 would do you well, avoid the Alfa though, mate of mine had one for 3 years from brand new, in the last 4 months of ownership it cost him £600 a month, every month in major things going wrong, would have been ok if the warantee was still there but he'd done alot of miles, i wouldn't risk it. Saying that, he did love it and say it made him feel proud to own which the replacement saab 93 aero failed to do..

Biased I know, but you can get a VERY good example of a Calibra for £3K.... take your pick of the models... even a good turbo can be had for that much

I have always like the Audi Coupe...

Would only go for a 16v up though, as the 8v was the same engine that was in the Audi 80 that my mum used to own....... which was REALLY slow!!

You get a nice torquey V6 model in the Coupe, so if MPG isnt a huge concern then that would be my choice.

Cheers,
Grant

Just what I was thinking - rarely see them under 4k, and then its a tatty very basic massive miler which needs money spending on it. Same with the A4 really, you cant get a decent one for 3k.

I'd go for a Mk3 Golf GTi 16v or VR6 - you should pic up a fairly nice one for 3k, and the insurance is less than you'd think (thought about a VR6 last year and was under 500quid comp at 23)

Says it all
Any self-respecting coupe owner wouldn't let their car anywhere near a main dealer. They are renowned for their utter hopelessness and complete lack of knowledge about the coupe.
FFSH is scary and a buyer should ask for a discount if buying a car with this. (seriously)

Great car, classic looks, beautifully balanced and loads of torque.Had a 91J plate in red and also had a C27 ALPINA, but these were rare when new, so i don't imagine you'd get one for 3K, but if you could......210 BHP, and rarer and quicker than an E30 M3. I would say the E30 325i sport is a superb option, and if you trawl the right sites you'll get a fully spec'd one i/e recaro heated leather, aircon, full electrics, LSD,etc...plus these were not a cheap car new and so have been v-well looked after in general.
