1979 Merc 280 SE auto with BIG MILES!
That's what I bought, on impulse on ebay last night and picked up earlier tonight.
When I say big miles I mean....... wait for it 805000, and no, I didn't put an extra 0 on the end in error!! Original engine and 'box, apparently.
Went to pick it up from Slough (from N London) knowing virtually nothing about it except that it had 6 months test and 3 months tax, and that mega mileage.
Got there and it looked ok. Looked closer and it looked better. Popped the bonnet and the engine was freezing. Owner said he'd not driven it for 2 weeks, so I got in, turned the key and the ****** burst into life straight away.
I did 100 miles in it after making sure it was road legal. Took it to 120mph on my private road near the M25, before bringing it home. I even played the kick-down game with some **** in a new 318i and made him look silly.
What a car. Handles like a North Sea ferry, but is bolted together like a tank. And it's virtually rust free. Everthing works on it - leccy windows x4, PAS, heater/fan on every setting, central locking, and everything else electric! It doesn't like idling in drive but that's nothing that can't be sorted.
For a 25 year old car that's been around the world several times it certainly puts a lot of modern cars to shame.
Not bad for £200

I'll sort some pics.
Oil pressure's on max and there's no smoke, even on start up.
I've just had a look at previous MOTs, and it's only done 1500 miles since 1995 so someone's spent half their life in this thing at some point.
It must have been serviced well to be still going like it is!!

Whats the current record for big miles in a merc? - some greek taxi driver got a stacked headlamp jobbie 240 over 2million miles odd I think- it was a diesel though.
I think the other record is for a volvo P1800 (the saint )
You still see the things being used as taxis when I go abroad. I don't think I've been in one and looked at the odmometer and seen anything much below 500K kms
Remeber it's not only the engine on these things that wear well...most other cars munch up their autoboxes by 100-150K Not to mention suspension, shocks, bushes, subframes, steering, balljoints, bearings, propshafts, diff. And not to mention the interior and bodywork - especially on something that old!

I've just been out for a spin around N London to give it a proper run and to give the 'box a good bashing (oo er) and it's lovely and smooth. I can't believe the bloke let it go for £200.
It likes a drink though!

An old E class merc (on the original lump!!) that had done almost 3 million miles or something daft...
Apparantly mercedes have asked him for the car to put in their museum and in return have given him a brand new e class
There was a link posted a few months back somewhere

Just realised that mine has a scoobie like thirst for petrol. Put £26 in it last night and it almost empty after 120 miles.

Is it full dealer history? If so get to 250k and present your documents to MB for a gold badge and plaque.

Nothing with it apart from loads of old MOTs, and the present one, of course!
I think I'll be keeping her for a while.

Cool bit of retro there.
My Dad had one of those when I was a kid and when he sold it he'd done over 300000 miles in it without it ever letting him down other than consumables.
He still drives mercs but swears that the quality of them now is nowhere near what it was when your motor was rolling off the production lines.
That sort of mileage out of a car is amazing. You got a bargain for £200 - I bet it costs just under half that to fill it up!

Mate, I'm well pleased with this purchase.
It's by far the nicest (not best) I've ever driven.
I've even (today) tried to break the engine by limiting it, but it just takes it and pulls whilst drinking petrol.
Had a race with a new transit van and lost - but never mind. On the move she does 60 - 100 in not much time at all
