Default Real-world performance & rental cars

My Passat's in the shop having a front bumper graft. Currently tooling around in a Punto 1.2 Active rental car.

Had to go from Cheshire to Farnham yesterday, a 420 mile round trip that I make regularly. I was NOT looking forward to it.

My best one-way time in the Passat is 3 hours 28 mins, around 61 mph average. And that was taking advantage of every gap and cruising in the 80s / 90s.

Yesterday, the best 1-way took 3 hours 35 minutes in the Punto. The little thing sat there at 80mph happy as Larry on the motorway, and the fuel computer said 45mpg for the trip.

Arrived almost as fresh as I would in the VW too -- no aches & pains, no headache from road noise, nothing.

Just goes to show that for the average journey on the average British road, almost any modern car is as fast as any other.

This is a matter of fact!

Especially 'one day hires' with all insurance waivers.....

They're specially made to be thrashed and driven so they bounce off the rev limiter.

Have you ever tried to see who gives up 1st: you or the rev limiter? I've never beaten one yet, but I keep having a go

Rev limiter is ALWAYS my 1st aim when in a hire car. I do 1st, 2nd and 3rd when cold and then give it a good brake check.
