Is now a good time to buy a Focus?
Hi
I'm in the throws of getting some funds for a new car, I can't afford something fast which is what I'd really like so I just want something nice and that works! I've driven a few Foci and I really like them plus as I used to work at a Ford main agent I can get good prices on parts and stuff
I'd like to get a face lift model if poss, a 51 plate so I'm looking at between 5 and 6k I reckon. My question though is this, will the second hand prices drop significantly when the new model is released in January? I say signifcantly as my car is currently off the road with no MOT and no tax at the end of the month so I'd have to either spend a couple of hundred fixing that or buying a shed till next year!
Waddya reckon, buy one now or wait?
Cheers!

New models generally lower prices a fair bit when lots of new ones hit the used market - usually 3 years after release when the first fleet ones are retired. As soon as the new-shape hits the streets it'll only really be the nearly-new old shape Focus's that get hit on price.
I reckon the Focus prices are a bit too high for a hatch with a cheap badge, but they are rated highly.
Why not look at a Skoda Octavia? 6k should get an ok one, and much better than the Focus in many areas. Also a brand thats on the up, so will almost certainly lose less money than the Focus over say 3 years from now.

There are some great deals on new run-out models.
Local (Swiss) dealers have them piled high on the forecourts at 15% off MSRP. That's before haggling -although I'm not sure how much more off you could expect.
My guess is that 15% off MSRP is a good deal on a brand new Focus. I would expect to see clean 2yr olds still being advertised for 70% of their new price.
In summary, don't expect the massive discounts to clear the stock of unsold new Focus Mk1's to drive the price down on 2yr olds.

Prices are already low.
I bought a 2004 Focus 1.6 Zetec with Climate Pack (Air Con & Heated Screen) & Metallic, 20000 miles a couple of months back for £7150 plus auction fee - about half new list price.
Handle well, refined, comfortable and low insurance group. Bit gutless, but then it makes me appreciate the Scoob even more
Cheers,
Ian.

Thanks I haven't looked at the Skoda, mainly cos I don't want one! Thanks for the suggestion, your points may be valid but I'm settled on a Focus
I can't afford dealer prices so won't be buying new.
DW, are you sure yours isn't for sale?

Never for sale, bloody fantastic cars regardless of what anyone says.
Newer cars (i.e. newer than 1994) always fell numb to me, but our Focus is very close in driving pleasure to my 205, and thats saying something.

i bought a 2 year old 1.8 lx a few months back. 5 doors, nice blue colour,a/c, 20k miles, decent alloys, decent everything. i bought it as my runaround, but its surpassed my expectations in every way. got a great warranty supplied by ford through aa, i now have a warranty for next 3 years(covers everything except tyres and brake pads, its a **** hot warranty for £400). but in the time ive had it, its never gone wrong, doesnt squeak or rattle (unlike the e46 m3 i had!), handles brilliantly, cheap as chips to insure and run. i really cant praise it high enough, honestly. utterly fabulous car for the money.
