Default buying a rover 420 sdi

Getting rid of my pug 405 sri for something thats cheap to run but can't handle little 1.1 engine, ill end up killing it. The car i wanna go for is a rover 420 sdi as it does 53mpg and is big enough for transporting stuff around. Now im looking at spending 1500 top end and the car has to last me 1-2 years max when ill be getting something newer. I have a few questions that need answering.

1) a lot of cars for under 1.5k are over 1k milage will this be safe enough to go for?

2) how far does a full tank u when doing urban driving and motorway and how much to fill the tank?

3) are there any major negative issues with this model of car?

heres some examples i was looking at buying on autotrader. are those prices good for the model?

Thumbs down

I ran one of these as a company car, 98 model when new and it was the most unreliable car I have ever had. It didn't even make it the 5 miles to my house on the day it was delivered from the dealer without 2, yes 2 major engine faults. It visited the dealer no less than 17 times in the 3 years I had it and that doesn't include servicing.

Wouldn't touch one with a barge pole.

To counter that, my mate had one that ran like a dream for years, plus a 220 SDi (same engine) and I had a 620SDi as a company car that had 150,000 on the clock when it went and never had a thing wrong with it (it was the company beater and pool car before it was mine!).

See if you can find a 420GSDi as they have full leather, but they're very rare. They do average around 50mpg and are pretty quick for a diesel.

A full tank in todays money is probably about £45 and you'll easily get 600+ miles to the tankful.

I've got a 98, 420 diesel and it's does what I wanted it to. It gets me to work cheaply and carts the family around, It's returning around 53mpg and so far been reliable touch wood and the cars done about 125,000 miles. And it make's me appreciate my Evo when I get in it! Oh the joy of diesel cheap, but buy no means fun! Tony

Just make sure you get the one with the intercooled 105bhp engine and not the 86bhp one - ask before you buy, as the 86bhp one is pants - Maestro van anyone ?
