Need some advice and help.

We have a K reg 1993 Rover 216sli ( Honda engine). The car has 123k on the clock and starts an runs everytime. However, on start up, the engine idles a bit rough and in neutral the car shakes especially in this weather. Once heated up to normal temp. the car is ok in 2nd,3rd,4th and 5th gear. What can I do sort this out? It also sounds like a tractor when the engine is cold.

Help much appreciated.

Is the idle speed high enough?

It maybe worth changing plugs/leads/rotor arm etc. If the car's shaking it maybe running on 3 cylinders? Also it might be worth checking the injectors out.
We had a 416sli upto April this year with 105K and it as faultless, best of all, they can survive a cambelt snapping at 4500rpm on the motorway with only a replacement cambelt needed.

There's plenty of folks there with knowledge of the Honda engined Rovers.

Don't know much about the Honda engined cars, my Rovers have Rover T16 Turbo units but, IIRC, which is not always the case ... .. the Honda engines have one fairly common fault associated with the distributor.

It sounding like a tractor probably mean the tappets have never been checked and adjusted.

The pistons usually are a bit slappy when cold too, which is nothing to worry about.

As for the bad running shaking, can't really help - I can't conclude anything from the symtoms you state. If it's missfiring then I'd check the ignition system as a 1st port of call, new plugs and lead if need be.

As John said the distributors are very very prone. If it hasn't already been replaced/repaired then it maybe a possibility.

Just remembered, the guy who bought my old car has just had to replace an ignition bit, not sure if it was the coil or amplifier maybe?

Thanks for all the advice. Do you think using a thicker oil/additive will help the noisy tappets?

No - additive wont sort the tappets as they are solid - not hydraulic. They have to manually checked and adjusted.

It should be done as part of the service schedule (3years I think) But in reality - most garages don't bother at all!

had a 214 that used to eat distributor caps - sounds like similar symptoms.

Very prone to suffering from damp - trying giving everything a liberal coating of wd40 once everythings warmed up and running ok.
