Fun Diesel for c.£500?
Does such a car exist?
If so/not what would be the best idea for a cheap runabout that runs off fumes?
I dont think my 205GTI is best suited to inner-city driving, as well as being parked on the road in a sky-high post-code So a runabout would seem a good option and i can keep the 205 at home for wekends .
Any suggestions gratefully received.

I was thinking a 306 but they will be a little out of budget unless i sell the 205 as well which kinds of defeats the object.
Not thought of the AX actually but probably a better idea than a C***a

For what its worth, I've got an AX 1.0 Petrol. The diesel is a bit quicker, and does 67 to the gallon (1.0 is late 40's), but you will pay more.
If you've got a 205GTi as well (as I have), then an AX won't feel unfamiliar at all. Actually a pretty entertaining steer once at 60 mph.
Throwaway cars at their best.

You can pick up a Citroen ZX TD for about £300 these days, and they're meant to handle as good as the petrol hot versions (passive rear wheel steering etc). Quick enough too, but you WILL have problems with it! (that's why they're cheap!)
Alternative is a big engine big depreciator, like a 2.5D Carlton or something - smooth, quiet, fast on the motorway but not much fun elsewhere I suppose.

Pug 106, 1.5D, I ran one as a second car for over a year, was great on juice (60+ MPG was normal) and for a little deisel it was suprisingly nippy (dont go for the 1.4 though, theres a world of difference)
and the best part, i could just leave it anywhere and knew it would be there when i returned.

Try the Citroen ZX Volcane T Diesel
Its got the 306 D Turbo engine and Sports Suspension and Seats etc etc it was quite a car in its time. I had one for a few weeks as a company car and it was better than all the other ussual suspects of the time, Sierra, Cavalier etc etc

Some 306 can be tuned, others not. Some of the early ones had engines with mechanical diesel pumps which you can't do anything with. Later ones had electric pumps which can be fitted with a tuning box .... dunno which models though.

I have a pug 106 1.4 diesel for the winter.
Its slow as hell, but the handling can be entertaining. Skinny tyres cope well in the snow. Its dead light, does 50+mpg being thrashed round town.
It blends in nicely, and gives me no security worries. I dont even lock it half the time I park it.
Bought it from an auction for a couple of hundred quid. Recently, something bad has gone wrong, either the head gasket or a crack somewhere as the coolant is being pressurised when the engine runs. It refuses to die though, and I fully expect it to last for the rest of the winter, when I can either scrap it or sell it for a hundred quid spares-or-repair. The only down-side is the heater matrix appears to have been clogged up with oil sludge so now only blows cold air. Im now looking for a 12v heater
