Default skoda superb

just wondered if any of you on here had any experience of owning / drivivng a skoda superb tdi 130? my dad is about to buy one and then got told they were unreliable, so hes now in two minds, hes had an octavia and had no bother but now hes kinda stalling, i dont want him spending nearly £18000 on a donkey so hopefully someone on here can help me out with some advice, no wise cracks or skoda jokes, weve heard them all (twice) cheers.

Got to be an excellent car surely? Basically a Passat, but slighter bigger (I think), and majors on comfort more than the VW (so not so good on handling). Build should be excellent with all VW parts.

My mums got a Skoda Fabia and Im well impressed with that - build is very solid - doors and boot make a very convincing 'thud' when shutting, and the interior is just basically like an current VW (ie excellent, if a little dull).

www.briskoda.net has a fair number of Superb owners amongst the many Octavia (and now Fabia) vRS owners. Not heard anything at all about unreliability and I've had an Octavia and Fabia also.

Superb is on the extended Passat / Audi A6 platform. Visit Jabba with the 130 pd and it becomes a safe and sound 180 pd

Skoda are high up on all the reader surveys. Loads of euro taxi drivers are ditching their mercs for skoda superbs. That tells me all I need to know about how reliable they are. Who told you they were unreliable? They may know of an instance of one being unreliable but that hardly makes them all unreliable.

Skoda are decent on customer service too (unlike vw) and seem to appear well with all those in the know.

I had one as a hire car. 1.8T was quite nippy and very comfy. Felt like an upmarket Audi too. The interior is cavernous and I had a picnic in the back of it!

The only niggle would be depreciation - an £18k Skoda, are you sure?...

May not bad as bad as you think - the Fabia has some of the best residuals in the class, and that includes being up against the Polo.

many thanks once again, hes gonna go ahead with it and just get one, as for depreciation lol it will have over 250000 miles on it so hes not bothered about depreciation cos it will be worth nothing in 3 years time.

My 'tip' with the 2 Skodas I've had (Octavia, Fabia) which applies to most other cars, is to buy at 12-18 months old with low miles :-

The Octavia cost me £10500 against a new price of £16500. Sold it 2 years later for £7,000 - better on depreciation than the last 2 Subarus amd Audi I've had over a similar period.

The Fabia cost me £8250 (with 2500 miles) against a list of £11600.

You then have another 18 months to 2 years to decide if you want to extend the 'official' warranty (as with Subaru) or sell it whilst its still attractive to dealers - ie with moderate miles and still (just) under warranty.

The PD130 is installed in nearly every mainstream model of Skoda, Seat, VW and Audi, it's pretty much bullit proof.
The Superb is actually based on the LWB Passat that is sold on the Asian market. Skoda have a reputation for making their cars more reliable than the VW equivalent so I would say he doesn't have much to worry about.

Cheers
