320d sport or 330d sport.....
Right, due to the fact the missus hates the 182 and i'm fairly bored with it, i'm on for a change.
decided to get something that i can keep for a few years and wont depreciate like a stone. Budget about 17k, can go higher but i'd rather not.....
if i go for the 320 then i can get one about 2 yr old with low mileage, 330 will be older with higher mileage.
anyone with any advice would be greatly appreciated.
p.s. i promise to get one with indicator stalks

320D is pretty flat going by the 150bhp model I test drove with my old man. The newer 330D is pretty damn good, it's the model he went for in the end, touring SE spec.
The older 330D has less poke but is easily chippable upto the level of the new car. Good cars for the high mileage user but I have to say the BMW's we've had have been no good in poor conditions ie snow and ice. In fact they were downright scary.

320D =
330D =
...if you get my meaning.
Most likely because it's got UK tyres fitted. Get a 'proper' winter tyre on (like they do on the continent when it snows) and you will be amazed at the difference.
Cheers

We have a 330d on the company fleet - can't fault it really although not particually quick and reasonably economical and very good handling, although no LSD and heavy front end gets a little boring with no traction on around the back lanes !>!>!
Never been in the 2.0d - but the bigger has to be the better ?!?!

cheers for the info, so consensus is a pre-facelift model chipped........
i would prefer the 330 but am a little wary of spending so much money on an older car.
guess i'll have to curb the enthusiasm and think on it.

Les, the winter tyre thing may be bang on. It's running on Conti's at the moment and is fine in the wet but snow/ice is brown trousers time- even a small amount.
Problem is trying to explain to the lease company that we need winter tyres on the car- as it is my Dad takes my Impreza when it snows and I walk!

Hi mate
Don't know the answer to that one but I'd check with a specialist like Micheldever Tyres. Remember the brief flurry of snow we had last winter? I was driving home in a 528 auto with seriously expensive performance tyres and it was all over the place - it was scary.
There's probably a compromise available but winter conditions like that just aren't catered for in the UK.
Cheers

For the few times we get problem weather in this county it's hardly an issue.

Had a 330 D Sport for the last 18 months mate and it's **** on. Usually change every year but I've no intentions to sell it at all. Compared to a 320 D there's just no comparison

after everything went for the 320d, basically came down to warranty etc.... was uncomfortable spending 16-17k for a 4 or 5 year old car.
got an 18 month old 320d (150bhp model) with only 25k on it and most of the toys.
cheers for the input everyone, i know the 330d is the one to have and the better engine etc... but i'm v.happy with my purchase.
massively different to the 182 but still good fun in its own way.

The missus has a 320d Sport on order as her next company car. Would have prefered the 330 but unfortunately no 330d as an option. The ride's quite firm with the 18" wheels and Sport suspension but hey, it looks pretty damn fine and it doesn't cost much in tax ( compared to her 318SE ) . Having the Imola Red colour al la M3's 'cos we're fed up with black, silver etc...

Mattoz... at the moment she's got a Passat 130 TDi as a rental car untill the new Beemer arrives and that really flies - oodles of torque. I'm guessing the 320 with 20 bhp more will be even better? After driving these diesels with lots of power ( got a Transit Connect 1.8 TDdi with little power that I use for work), and cruising the motorways in 6th and not needing to change gear, I'm now realising that all this changing gear in my CTR can get a little bit tiresome
