Cool What's your second car, ideas please.

It's time for me to throw my company car back at the *loody Tax Man.
Can't beleive that they have not been taxing me for the last 2.5 years.
Now I've got 70k on the clock the Golf Gti is going back.

I need to replace her because my baby (WR1) is not going on in the winter or doing work miles.

So, I'm after ideas for a second car and what people would advice, keeping in mind I travel twice to the office a week, 55 miles each way on the M4 so I don't think a Smart car would do.

Ideas Scooby People please.

We bought a M reg Citreon ZX Diesel with 50k on the clock and in immaculate condition for £1250. My girlfriend uses it for work (50 miles/day on M40) and gets 55-59 mpg.

We looked into getting a diesel Golf but that would have cost twice as much for the same mileage and they also sell very quickly so are difficult to find.

If you want a second car, make it a complete contrast to the WR1 otherwise you'll end up with two tools for doing the same job. So that leaves you with something mega comfy, or very selfish !
(I have a 528ise auto for racking the miles up & an Impreza for messing about with.)

I bought a Vauxhall Chavalier 2.0GLi for £100. If anything breaks, unless it is vital for the cars running it doesn't get fixed.

Any new noise on the scooby used to worry me silly wondering how much it was gonna cost..... Now it's a fun exciting game trying to guess which part will fall off next

Does me about 12 miles a day to work and back and taken to all the places I'd park in, shopping, cinema e.t.c. It's such worry free driving leaving it parked at a dodgy angle right up against someone elses car, not giving a crap what happens to it whilst I'm away. If it was stolen I'd only be pissed off coz I have to walk home.

I use a Nissan Primera as my 2nd car and have done for 2 years. Cheap as chips to buy, bullet proof reliability & 400+miles to a tank (quite a fun drive too !)

Clive,

I bought my M reg Nissan Primera 2.0 Diesel, great chassis and steering, not quick but VERY economical 50+MPG all the time.

I paid £450 for it a while ago!!! It now has 195,000 miles on it and has not missed a beat. There are many 300,000 miles plus ones.

You cannot buy better or cheaper than the TOTALLY underrated Nissan Primera and NEVER has a car been so reliable. Still has the original exhaust system, suspension, engine, gearbox, only one clutch, etc. BOMBPROOF - no need to look at a 1.0 litre etc when you can get better.

Fuel saving, saving on tyres, brakes and servicing on the Impreza etc - it more than pays for itself EVERY year, even budgeting for £500 - £600 per year for repairs and servicing on it. Insured, taxed, serviced and roadside recovery scheme for £500 if you shop around.

Brian

Never stopped you buying the WR1 did it...

Seriously, something like a Peugeot 306 diesel or turbo diesel would be good. Cheap to buy and insure, good MPG, cheapish to repair and service (there's a bloke based at a farm in Hannington who specialises in Pugs and is VERY cheap).

Citroen XM 2.1TD would be ok for doing lots of motorway miles, very comfortable (active hydropneumatic suspension), pretty fast, quiet, not bad MPG. I had a 2.5TD once which was amazing but not so good on economy as the 2.1TD. However they can be pricey to repair if (when) they break, there's a lot to go wrong.

Don't worry, if you get something embarassing just tint the windows so nobody know's it's you (except us).

What's wrong with the WR1, yer big yessie?

Best road car I've ever driven. You wouldn't keep me out of one come a bit of bad weather.

Thinking about it, aren't they rather good in bad weather?

Richard.

1986 Ford Capri 1600 Lazer

Came with a years ticket, new brake's and calipers, new exhaust, K & N air filter, Webber Carbs, ALL the electrics working. Only down side, a small bit of rust on the offside wing.

240.00. Fully comprehensive insurance.

All for the princely sum of 400.00 off E-Bay

Go on, you KNOW you want one

ZX Volcane diesels are excellent cars and cheap as chips. Old style Mondeos, 35mpg, v quiet and refined (relatively speaking ) and also cheap as chips. 406s are cheap now too. Could probably get an E36 325tds for £2k

We have a Fabia TDi Comfort as a second car. VW PDTDi engine with 100bhp/177lbft in a supermini makes for good peformance and a Jabba conversion gives 145bhp/240lbft for under £400.

Will do over 70mpg with a light foot on A roads and is group 6 insurance.

Comes with climate aircon, elec windows and mirrors, fuel computer, ABS, EBD, EDL, ASR and drinks chiller.
Elegance trim gets alloys and heated seats.

It's so good I've been thinking about changing our main car for a Fabia vRS with Jabba re-map.

Cheers
Lee
