Re-mapping TDi's for extra power/torque
guy in office just had his Fiat done, thing is, everyone wants to know why don't all these diesels come with this extra power and torque as standard????

The following is effected by a re-map chip:
Econamy (not always the case)
Longevaty
Durability
Insurance
Emissions (not always the case)
Premature wear on wearable components (brakes/tyres etc)
Premature wear on mechanical components
Heavy use of lubricants etc
suspension maybe unable to cop with the power hike
There are arguments for everyone but a manufaturer looks at a FWD car and thinks 200lb/ft is plenty for this car and subsequently limits the torque to keep the tyres in good nick along with the bits above
But that is a guess and not fact......

And not forgetting that most people don't care that much about performance (as long as it goes all right, they're happy) but are concerned with higher running costs (as per post above) and descreased reliablility. Currently we hear of lots of people running OK for 20/30,000 miles, but what about those at 60/70/80++++? These are more important.

There are some on the UK-MKIVs board that have run Revo / Jabba remaps for 50,000 miles+ without anything other than routine servicing ....
But the claimed 300 lb-ft after a remap is close to the edge for clutches, gearboxes etc, and it will shorten the lifespan of the car.
I suppose like with tuned Scoobies, some will have the extra power, use it sensibly and suffer no consequences. Others will tune to grenade spec, rag the motor and wonder why it blows up in six months ...

I think the idea behind alot of diesel tuning is to give the car the performance it should have had in the first place. Quite often the manufacturers supply cars with engines in a low state of tune to allow for manufacturing tolerances, poor fuel quality, lower taxation brackets etc. A good remap should increase flexability, in-gear acceleration, and in some cases may even improve economy. With only modest gains in bhp/torque the standard power train and chassis should be up to it.
I've just purchased a Citroen C5 and after its run-in I fully intend to get a tuning device that will give it a bit more go (if it will pull as well as a Mondeo TDCI I'll be happy)
