due to getting back into road rallying and buying a plot of land i'm thinking of selling my impreza and getting one of the above cars to use as my daily driver, anyone got any info on these cars or something else? i want something thats cheaper to run and better on fuel, i was also considering a Clio 182 Sport or a Peugeot 206 GTI 180.

I've got a Golf GT TDI PD 130bhp, and doing about 100mph at does about 46 mpg!!!! The most I've had is 54mpg, least about 38! So fuel consumption is good.

Leon Cupra TDi is the same PD150 engine if you want a more sporty ride.

My PD130 Ibiza averages about 50mpg doing London and back. Best is 67mpg going up the M6 to Bolton in traffic one morning, worst is around 38mpg ragging it around Wales with some Scoobs

I would go for the Leon Cupra 1.9TDI 150bhp, bought the wife one, looks like an Audi inside, very rapid for an oil burner, firm suspension good road holding.
Comes Fully loaded as standard.
Drove the golf and found it to be bland, soggy road holding.

Every time i get back in the scoob after driving the leon, i wonder where all my torque has gone.

Revo Technik is a company who can reflash the ECU on VAG motors both petrol and diesel. If you buy the SPS switch as well you can switch between factory and Revo settings so the dealer will never know

Had it done on my Audi S3 to great effect.

I love the idea of the 150PD, but the obvious problems seem to be the typical VAG vague steering, soft suspension etc. But it is a grown ups car with pleanty of go in it so it is a good choice.

However, french cars are the opposite, esspecially the 182, 172 cup things. The steering feels precise, the turn in and grip/handling is spot on, the 2.0 twin cam is very torquey as well and sounds fantastic on full chat. But bear in mind the rattles, electrical problems 'couldn't give a sh*t' dealers and heart stopping residuals. My advise, is buy a used 172 CUP and use it as it was intended. Loose £2000 in a year, but at least you have enjoyed every minuet.

As for the peugeot, i don't know a lot about them - seemed a bit too little to late to me, the GTI was a flop and an additional 40+ bhp and some wide seats wouldn't do it for me -

Agree with RON.

Ride is (fairly) swift in the 150, but suspension is very soft, particularly front end. Wondered whether it was just mine when I first got it!! Cruises well on the motorway at high speeds.

MPG is about 45 round town and at higher speed crusing, you can get about 55mpg crusing about 65-70 on the motorway.

Nice motor, can't fault it.

i cannot fault the TDi. it will give you a min of 40mpg, and more torque than you can shake a stick at!!!

Hi, new to the forum.

I bought a second hand TDi 150 Golf about 6 weeks ago. It is not a car that you would buy for "B" road thrills. It is competent though when you have learnt to drive it in a style that suits the car (read more gentle inputs to set up the car properly).

I would say that the car is nippy rather than fast, though many have said that a chip will make it much quicker. The economy is excellent. I have not averaged less than 45mpg to a tank full. It seems to do 40-45mpg round town, 45-55 on the motorway (nearer to 55 if you keep anywhere near the limit) and even if cruising at 120mph it still does 36-38mpg.

I use the car for work and going to the pub/shopping and then have a fun car for the weekend. I find the car ideal for this as it does not attract unwanted attention is quicker than a lot of other cars out there and is comfortable.

Would I buy one as a hot hatch? No, but if you do a lot of miles, and I do, it is an excellent compromise between a bit of fun and a workhorse without breaking the bank.

Try and find one with the leather interior as it is much nicer

I have also changed the standard Michelin tyres to Goodyear Eagle F1s and it has made a massive difference to the car, especially in the wet.

I also have a PD 150 as my daily driver. It is a 2003 model 3 door. I think they must have changed the suspension in the later ones as mine is perfect, not soggy not too hard. I generaly average 46mpg,but on a long run with the climate off I have seen an avarage of 68mpg. It is fooking quick for a diesel..... one puff of smoke and I'm gone
