Default Any tall people used an MX5?

The missus wants a new car and the MX5 has been chosen as top of the pops so far, so we went to look at some yesterday.

The thing is, I do most of the driving say on trips to the in-laws in London etc, so although its her car, I need to be able to drive it.

I'm 6ft and 17 stone, and fitting into the MX5 we tried yesterday was a squeeze.

Is there anyway of reducing the seat height (using spanners) or is it possible to fit a smaller steering wheel without damaging the handling?

I looked into this. I'm 6'4" and 13.5st.. Fancied a MX5 or similar to share with missus but found both shapes rediculously small. Made enquiries about dropping the seat but not easy if you wanna be able to move it between the two of you.. Easy enough to fit a small wheel but I needed headroom too.. Gave up and got an MR2 Mk2 targa instead..

I believe you already had one of these though.

Others to write off if you're anything like as capacious as me:

MR2 Mk1, MR2 Mk3, Z3, S2000 (not comfortably though close), MGF

I've tried all those and failed over the years.

I'm 6'4 & 15 stone and I fitted in my old S2000 no probs. Had to fiddle with the seat to get it just right though. I was OK in a Z3 too although there's nowhere to put your clutch foot which is annoying. MGF got in OK but defo too small and didn't like the driving position. Not tried the MR2's. Think I managed to fit into a MX5 but probably couldn't drive one for any length of time.

People have such varying dimensions (long legs short body, vice versa etc.) so best to go find one and see for yourself if you fit or not.

Cheers chaps.

Sister has an MGTF and its just ridiculous - I can drive it in a straight line (just) but it aint going round corners.

The MX5 was drivable, just not really comfortable.

MR2 Mk2 is the next possibility - she liked my old one a lot and used to ask if she could borrow it all the time, I think she just wanted something newer.

Budget is about £6500, any other possibilities i've missed?

Gen 6 Celica convertibles are stunning looking. Not sure how well they go but if they're based on the GT rather than the ST you're looking at about 190ps. Available up to 2000 as an import IIRC. Not sure about the domestic market.

Sounds like a well padded posterior can add a few inches when sitting. Never thought of that. Sometimes I wish mine was better padded, especially during long haul flights!

Oh dear! I'm rambling online! I'm now officially addicted to Scoobynet!!!

I'm nearly 6' and 20 stone and find my MX5 a perfect fit!

My friend is 6'4" and he settles in well too - he's about 12 stone?

Thumbs up

I'm 6ft 6 and about 14 stone - I fitted in the Mk1 MX5's, but with the roof up my head was touching the fabric.

As other people have said, it's just down to individual shape / size - Get down a dealer and check a few out. It's worth it as they are great fun to drive!

LOL

No way you'd fit (comfortably) in an MX-5 Simon, my mate has one and it's bl00dy tiny, he let me have a go once and I couldn't because I didn't fit!

Plus you'd look sooooo g@y!
