Pug 406 diesels are great. You can get a good spec'd one for very little dosh. Important to have FSH especially if its a high miler. Check for oil leaks, I've had 2 406's and both have been bone dry but have seen plenty with wet bottoms. A slightly cheaper option is a Xantia, same engine (1.9) as the Pug. They also do a nice 2.1TD which is pretty swift.

Will you be selling your scooby on here ??

as much as ive liked my previous peugeots i dont think they touch the Fiat marea 2.4 TD for build quality, think the estate is best, may be a biased opinion tho

Xantias have hydropneumatic suspension, so unless it's got new spheres on it I'd steer clear.

For cheap diesels you really only have two choices, IMHO: VAG and PSA. I believe that some of the Rovers use PSA diesels. Actually, three choices: Vauxhall Omega 2.5TDs use the BMW engine which is also good.

For an alternate approach, consider a large-engined petrol car that's had an LPG conversion. There aren't many around, but if you could pick up a BMW 535 or a 740 or something, or a large-engined Merc, that would be excellent. Insurance is a problem if you're going to run it as a second car, though.

Xantia or 406 is a good choice. Suspension spheres are cheap and easy to replace on the citroen so don't worry too much about that.
