Its gotta be a golf tdi
Scooby is being picked up by its new owner on Monday, so it's off to testdrive lots of cars this weekend.
I am keen if possible to buy from a dealer so it has been fully checked and comes with some kind of assurance.
Having spent a lot of time looking on the various dealers used-car locators, it seems that the golf is unbeatable.
For example, I can get a 98 model with 70k miles for 7k, and considerably cheaper if I do buy private.
Discounted the skoda octavia and fabia simply because of image.
Discounted the accord r simply because its petrol (33mpg vs 55mpg.... that is the whole point of the exercise)
Discounted the Audi as, ideally, I don't want to spend more than £8k.
The Seat comes close but I would really want the Cupra version, and it's well out of my price range secondhand.
The only other possibility is the vw passat. The 2001 130bhp version is just about coming in at 7-8k now, but I feel perhaps it is too big for me. Also my partner is just learning to drive and it would certainly be too big for her.
So, it has to be the golf.
Done some research, for £500 I can revo it to nearly 300lb/ft, and I am guessing a set of Eibach springs will help with the boat like understeer? Also possibly some lightweight alloys like pro race one's.
Incredible reliability, very low depreciation, 4 star NCAP crash test results, and a pretty sweet interior.
Okay, my mind is made up.
Anyone care to convince me otherwise???
Also, anyone have any information regarding tuning this MY golf chassis???

I hope its better quality than the GTi turbo (98) I had
I got rid within 2 months Both elec windows failed and the handling was pretty much like a boat ride. It was stiff, but wallowed a lot. In hindsight I should have had a really good test drive of it. Having said that, it was economical. Test every single thing on it, including the A/C, lights etc, see if its had recalls done (think there has been a couple?) and watch for the coil pack issue, not sure what models that's relevant.
Dont want to scare you off, but there are some problems with them, but should be ok if you check it. Also might be a bit harsh, as moving from a modded scoob to anything is a bit tricky!
Would have like to have tried a modded one though, with a remap and sorted handling...

Go Jabbasport custom remap £425 all in. Bout 3hrs on the rollers. Had an Audi done and a Golf GT TDI now, the Golf was 137bhp b4, 196 after !!!! A real flyer now that has tp be driven with a little care.
Check the reviews, it seems Jabbasport are the only ones with no negative feedback, I liked the idea of the custom map for the car.

Why, do you like being seen as someone who paid massively more than he needed to for something?

Ed, forgot about the Octavia RS. Serious piece of kit with a remap and I think they look very tough. Id have one. Not the Fabia though...
I had a 20 min battle with one in my modded Uk, and although I beat him fair and square he gained the advantage when he put the blue lights on!
The rozzers have them sorted at Jabba / AMD I believe?

No, because I don't like the image of the current range of Skoda cars! I can get a 2001 golf gt tdi for £7k, which is there or therabouts the same as I can get a tdi fabia octavia.
Will check out Jabba.
I tested a gt tdi 115 yesterday and I was utterly amazed. First ever tdi I've driven. Engine noise was like a petrol. Torque even in 6th (wow, lovely 6 spd box!) was a revelation. Great 6 speaker sterio have to say I'm impressed.
Drove it back to back with the Audi A3 1.9 tdi and it was like driving a tank and it sounded like a tractor.
Testing the integra today.

Passat is a good option, I can get the 01 MY 130bhp, but it would be too big for the missus to drive. Still considering it but need to find one today to test drive.
Not keen on the bora.
