Considering a 528/530/530d/540, what sort of discount if any should you expect from a dealer on the sticker price?

It depends on the dealer. The likes of the local Rydales round here have huge mark ups and have been known to knock off close to a grand. Others such as Benhams (another local dealer to me) seem to have much lower sticker prices and only budge about £400 after lengthy haggling.
Start on about £800, find as much as you can wrong with it, or extras not fitted (CD changer, carpet mats, Phone kit, Tyres - Brand and wear, cloth seats, tracker, satnav etc.) and get as much thrown in as you can.

They knocked off 10% or basically 3k of options thrown in for nothing..
as for a used car i would start negotiating at least £1500 under the sticker price especially if no trade in

I bought my 330d for 21k which was the sticker price.
But...they offered me 16k for my trade in initially. Told em i wanted 2k cost to change. After numerous phone calls where they upped the trade in price and i told em no i want 2k cost to change, eventually they met it.
So even if you dont get a discount you can often work on the trade in price.
