New Golf TDI's
just driven my mates new shaped golf TDI - i've got to say i was quite impressed with it. Really torquey engine and pulled very well. The interior is also a step up if not a bit plastic.
Any one have one of these ? if so how do you rate it and whats the mpg figures like?
Cheers

You need to speak to the guys on www.uk-mkivs.net there`s a Mk5 golf forum on there too. I`ve got a 150bhp Golf TDI (the old shape one) and get an easy 55/56 mpg on a motorway trip at 80/85 mph, and around 45 mpg around town.
Without turning this into another diesel v petrol thread I really like my Golf and can`t think of buying another petrol car for a while.

I get to drive a friends 03 TDI, I was well impressed to. Not slow at all and handled quite well, dare I say better brakes than the Scoob ?!
PS she gets 500 miles out of a tank easy

I went from a 130 bhp tdi to the Scoob. The TDI Golf is amazing. Only problem is it doesn't handle that well. I stuck a tuning box on mine and to be honest the in gear acceleration was probably similar to my 03 WRX. If only they'd make a 4 motion TDI with enough power to overcome the extra weight...only sold mine cos I had a moment on a wet roundabout and decided AWD was the answer...

The new Golf MK V Tdi outputs 140bhp rather than 150bhp despite it's larger displacement and there seem to be no real tuning options available in the UK.
Think the only point it has in it's favour is EURO IV compliance for co car tax.

The 140bhp Mk5 feels quite refined compared to the Mk4 150bhp. I have driven both and own and prefer the Mk4 model. These cars REALLY go like something out of hell when chipped. I had my 150bhp GT TDi live mapped and it now puts out 195bhp 280lb/ft torque. Wheel spins in 2nd in the dry!! lol
Awesome motors!

Shaun.

Wasn't counting the superchips option which I'd seen as I like my engines working preferably.
Never seen the Oettinger product but 180bhp is pretty poor when you consider the last generation Pumpe Duse engines were capable of higher figures.
Dumbing down because of EuroIV? or just a good start for an engine not at the end of it's development life like the old 1.9.

This diesels performance is none to shabby!
1.9 twin turbo diesel ( due on sale in 2006 ). 155mph AND 0-60 in 6 secs with a combined mpg of 47, all for £22K

If you get a chance try a passat 4Motion, I was mildly suprised, its not the barge you expect it to be, the 130 should remap to about 190/200 with loads of torque, a set of KW V3's & some bigger Brakes & you will have a fairly good Q car

I came from an S3 and it`s softer but not too bad. I`ve got the standard suspension set up (But on 17 inch alloys, part of the sport-pack) which is the same as the suspension on the petrol GTI 1.8T. The diesel unit is obviously quite a heavy unit so it isn`t a nimble car by any means but it isn`t as bad as some people like to think it is.
Try one, you might like it!
