Project X
Ok guys here's the conundrum,
I am thinking of doing a project which will result in an extreme 'stealth' car.
What I want to know is what is the best base car in peoples opinion to modify where the following applies: -
1) It will be easy to mod to good straight line speed with fast cornering abilities where the driver only has 'average' abilities
2) It will be completely 'stealth' in terms of looking like a very ordinary run of the mill saloon/hatchback.
Basically I'm looking to turn an ordinary car into a STi performing kind of motor......anyone got any ideas or already tried this ?
Budget around £8000 including mods
It must be stealth, it cannot look like a Saph Cossie/Pulsar GTiR kinda stuff....its gotta look very very average

Skoda Octavia 1.8T for £6k if possible then £2k on mods or Audi A4 1.8T for £4k then £4k on mods, should easy make 250bhp I think?
Lexus Soarer 4.0 V8 or 2.5 V6 TT (280bhp standard and price ranges from £3-7k)
Or buy an old passat/jetta then drop in a VR6 engine and stick on a supercharger!
Buy an Mondeo Ghia 2.5 V6 and twin turbo it (Noble style)!
Just ideas, couldn't guess the approx costs for the last two ideas

Volvo 340 uses a Renault engine.
The Volvo 340 DL (1.4) bascially has a non-turbo Renault 5 GTT engine in it.
We measured and up looked at the idea, and R5 GTT engine will fit straight in on the standard engine mounts!!
The bonus was (if you can call it that) the Volvo was RWD!!

I'd go for a five door Mk2 Golf on steel wheels an crap interior but with a tuned 20v turbo engine under the bonnet.
You could get an early crash damaged Ibiza Cupra T for a few grand and using a Mk3 Golf subframe, engine should go in with not too much hassle. Few quid on decent suspension and your laughing.
Reckon you could do this on an 8k budjet and still have some left for a nice roofrack

For ultimate stealth how about an old skool VW Beetle with a Subaru engine conversion. You can fit any of the Impreza engines and apparently the Legacy 2.2 will fit (twin-turbo GTB sylee maybe ). Bolt as much 911/914 running gear to it including the brakes and that would make one ultimate stealth machine.

Get a saab 9000 2.3 turbo (You could get a minter for under 3k), and pay these guys a visit www.maptun.com. In fact there are a lot of nutcase swedish tuners such as nordic, bsr and others who'll build you a monster.
I've seen a maptun car up close - a 9000 aero with around 500 bhp.

MKIII Granada 4x4 Scorpio and fit cossie running gear. Cheaper base vehicle means more money for the running gear
The volvo is a good plan, thought of that myself, solid running gear, renault engine, RWD and old fart image. Plus the swedes have done some mad conversions on 240's that just want to make you cry out "WHY!!"
I have seen a V6 gsi engine wedged into a Vauxhall Corsa - can't get more unsuspecting that that! Although the vauxhall V6 is rather ashtmatic at the best of times - better off with a 2.0 turbo lump, and that's already been done to death. Add to that the slight handling problem (in that corsa's don't - unless you have the lastest shape).
Now here's a batty idea: Rover 827....read on...
Now, I wonder if the Honda 2.7 V6 is anything like the NSX 3.2 engine in terms of size, shape and fitting? 3.2 and 280+bhp of standard VTEC with the torque to match plus the opertunity to turbo it as well. If it would fit into a 800 without too much bother then you'll be laughing (as will everyone else). Where you get a good 3.2 NSX engine and gearbox with all the EFi is another small issue
Or something else along the Rover theme - but more feasible: Old shape 216 (or Honda Concerto) And fit a 2.0 accord/civic type R engine, good for 220bhp without the weight issues when compared to Rover's M16 2.0 Turbo engine.

Renault 21 turbo (or 21 quadra if you want 4wd), rip off all the turbo bodykit so it looks like a stock 21.
Best thing is you could probably get the car & tune it to over 300hp for less than £1500 & sell the removed bodykit for a few hundred lol.
My mate had the FWD version at about 360hp & it was silly fast, quicker than my Z32 300zx in fact (while it was stock anyway )

I was going to work on the Fireblade a few weeks back and came up on an old Mazda 323 going through a country village. He opened up at the end of the speed limit, and I was boggled by the acceleration and handling. It isn't often I have my work cut out to keep up with a car. Hot hatches are usually mixed up with the dust on the rear view mirror.
I'd guess he must have been running 300 bhp.
So ... very cool stealth car. Full marks.

Kes (323GTR) on here has one (or had one, haven't heard from him in a while) that ran over 300bhp with loads more to come, the gearbox and clutch is the weak point.
I remember being at Well Lane with him on a Scooby day and someone taking the pee asking him if it was a Toyota Starlet. It all went quiet when it made about 280 with the clutch slipping drastically and hence beat 90% of the Scoobs there
