Question had a run against an m3 today....

but i'm not sure if what i seen was true or not? it was one of the new shape ones...not a csl or whatever it is. i have a my99 with the following mods...
Front entry TD05 turbo
REVOLUTION full three inch bore s/s exhaust
APEXI induction kit
WALBORO fuel pump
F.S.E. fuel pressure regulator
J.E. pistons
EAGLE rods
modified ROGER CLARK MOTORSPORT oil pump
modified ROGER CLARK MOTORSPORT bearings
NGK PF7R PLATINUM spark plugs
SAMCO coolant and turbo hoses
HELIX oil catch can
K&N breather filter
Modified intercooler brackets
three port boost solenoid
LINK ecu mapped by BOB RAWLE
it's running max boost at 1.4 bar.
i'm only asking as i had about 3 or 4 4th gear foot to the floor runs behind this m3 and every time i was getting slowly but surely nearer to him. was he indeed giving it full pelt or is my car that little bit fatser?

i'm just confused is all. i'm NOT bragging that i bet him or anything

edited to add, i think i'll be running about 350 brake with quite a bit of torque hopefully

Entirely expected outcome with your mods. He will have a little more power at the wheels (maybe 5%) with similar flywheel power to you, no turbo lag and gearing/RPM limit benefits to give more usable torque than 269 lbft would normally lead one to believe, but about 335kg (27%) extra weight.

The simple answer is your car has more usable torque in the mid range whereas the beemer has the real power at the top end. I had a run in with an M3 in my Leon Cupra R which is runing 270hp+285lb/ft and mid range I could stay with it but top end not a chance.

Not sure on the torque, the M3 has 269lbft with c.8000 RPM limit, so usable wheel torque at a given road speed in a gear with similar top speed potential will be similar to a 330 lbft Scooby?

cheers for the info, but when you say top end, does that mean that he is coming to his limiter he would be starting to pull away? i reaching *30mph and was still gaining?

A well set up TD05 car should pull gently away from an M3 unless you are off boost. With a 20G you have to use part throttle or a gear too high to avoid getting too close if following.

cheers john. i'm all happy now

sometimes you question yourself, why you mod the car at all, but it's these things that make it all good

Yes,but look at your highly modded car and the cost to you to buy and fit all the power mods, the M3 was gauranteed to be factory standard.

I know what i would rather have.

lol, i've fitted 85% of the parts meself m8. rebuild itself wasn't a lot of money and the parts used weren't really needed, but better than standard so shouldn't go again.

probably no more than 6k in parts there, so not a lot of money(if indeed the total even comes to that!)

But for someone who can't fit them themselves how much in labour

Still, however much it would cost to put a standard scooby to your level take that amount and spend it on modding an m3 then have a race Might be a bit closer, although dunno how much you can tune the latest beemers.

drb5 - alright m8

I owned a M3 evo conv for a few days & i got my m8 to take it a blast, so i could see what was the better my 04sti or the M3, we went on a variety of roads & to be honest the scoob was a lot better we went up to *40mph & the m3 wasnt making any work of the scoob, considering the evo had 50 odd k on the clock & i had 2ish k, mines wasnt even really ran in.
I to be honest was totally suprised & thought the M3 would have **** all over me & my mate i would say is on par with me at driving, so no good driver vs bad driver either

I no what i would rather have and its sitting all washed & cleaned in the drive

sti-04!!

ps my 2ps worth

cheers bud. i'm thinking your m8s was the older version though? and it was only over a mile or so on a motorway and i was in fourth all the time. so i'm not gonna say my car is faster than it full stop, i don't know that for sure. just expected it to have "**** all over me "!

I had a pop with a new M3 Convertable in my MY99 a few weeks ago. My car is hardly modded at all - straight through Magnex exhaust and bleed valve - set of eibachs and a big dollop of bird poo on the drivers side window. Whilst I didnt beat the M3 we were absolutely neck and neck.
Had I have been able to start alongside him as opposed to behind, Im quite sure my AWD start would have given me the edge...

I was smiling all week after that - good to know...
