I think former US president Jimmy Carter won one in 2002. Not for driving a car though.

Do you mean Noble ?

My mate test drove one at Paul Matty Sportscars- he loved it and said straight line speed was superb and the brake's were incredible- he's sticking with his Lotus Go-Cart for now though.

A friend of mine makes the engines for the Noble M12. Its a nice unit and he has not cut any corners, cant comment on the chassis.

I have seen loads on track days, usually being driven very slowly by their worried owners - but have seen a few in the hands of instructors and they are fairly well set up for track work.

Not really in the same price bracket as an Impreza, and from what I have heard, they're in a different league in terms of performance too. The new M400 looks even more insane, with a 3.5sec race to 60 and 185mph top end. Hmm - that's top-of-the-range TVR performance.

I though Ford built the engine. V6 from Mundane-o, but then agian, someone has to strap on a bl00dy great turbo and tempt some power out of it I suppose

3.0 V6 is from the Maverick, the older 2.5 was from the Mondeo.

Personally if I'm going to spend that sort of money, I'd want a bespoke engine rather than something designed for average Fords with a turbo added. I'd also want some kind of boot (Noble has none at all), and a better interior

Tuscan S is £10k cheaper than the new one, faster than the old one, has a bepoke engine, no turbo lag, and a decent boot.

I know the Noble isn't really a grand tourer, but then it isn't really a brilliant track car either. They struggle against Exiges on track, suffer oil starvation unless you get the baffled sump which is an option since Lee Noble insists it isn't a track car (ok it's standard on the M400).
Always been a bit confused as to what it is supposed to be. As an out and out track car it doesn't work and you can't take it on a journey of any length since you can't take luggage....

noble basically rip the ford unit apart and rebuild it with 2 turbos, it's barely even the ford engine when they finish with it

I'm just curious (not flaming) but what's wrong with having a Ford based engine exactly (apart from the badge if you're into that sort of thing)?

Cheers!

"Personally if I'm going to spend that sort of money, I'd want a bespoke engine rather than something designed for average Fords with a turbo added"

Go and buy a TVR, the only performance car where a complete engine is required at every service interval, sometimes before, unless you can cope with the shame of one with a third hand Buick V8 ?

Bespoke engines dont really exist these days, Roll Royce has a BMW unit, Bentley a VW unit, Lotus used Rover and now Toyota and dont make their own anymore since the Esprit finished and Morgan run BMW engines nowadays, I think only Aston Martin do their own units these days and I am not sure how much Ford involvement there are in these.

I think this is because the development cost so much and the fact that a large manufacturer can produce a better unit (i.e reliable) than a small concern like TVR, dont get me wrong I love TVR's but I wouldnt buy one unless the motor could be guaranteed to last longer than the air freshener.

I suppose this is why people buy Porsches ?

Yes, I've had the Nobel experience. You can certainly "have a blast" with it

Apparently He set up the Nobel prize after reading his very premature obituary while on a visit to Paris(the papers had mistaken him for his brother).
And after seeing how he would be remembered he didnt like it and decided to partake in what is probably the most sucessful case of
PR spin ever devised.

I have driven past his factory in North Wales many times

The Aston Martin V12 as used in the DB9 and Vanquish is (very simply) 2 Ford Duratec V6's stuck together

Mark, surely it is who specifies and builds the final finished engine, rather than who cast the block originally, which adds the sparkle?

Maybe if the car had a more bespoke engine it'd be even more expensive! Really fast, my neighbough has one and has promised me a go. will go knockin now.

I've driven an Exige and can honestly say that I was well gutted. My old standard UK turbo Impreza would have had it in a straight line, (with the exception of a standing start) and I'd put money on the Evo against one on a track. (it'd certainly leave it on the straights) Very disappointed. Not enough power, and very hard work, physically nackered after 30 minutes on the road (okay, I'm not fit enough). Noisy. Uncomfortable.

Just my opinion though

I personally can't see what would be wrong with a using ford based engine, as the constructors/financers of the two most successful competition engines EVER (DFV/DFR & BDA/BDG), I would like to think that their engine people new a more than a little about something or other

BTW, before anyone says, yes I know COStin & DuckWORTH were behind them, along with Brian Hart

Sounds pretty bespoke to me.
