106 gti modding advice
wanted to know if anyone could tell me which stainless full exhaust system is the one to go for with the 106 gti? also induction kits and ecu upgrades?

Knew someone who had a supersprint stainless manifold and it was great, really transformed the car.
Coupled with a decat and full system should free up a pony or two. And sound a lot better

If you're looking at changing the suspension I can highly recommend Bilstein's with Eibach springs. A light set of alloys (eg Speedline's), good set of tyres and you'll have one of the best handling cars on the road
I fitted a Magnex full system to mine and was pretty happy with it. Wouldn't bother with an induction kit - I fitted a Pipercross cone filter to mine and actually lost power.

thanks chaps.
the advice is for a 106 owning friend - i have already told him to do the bilstein/ eibach setup due to my days as a 205 driver! lol!
Moose - is there a link for the dastek chips at all? does the procomp induction have a cold air feed?
i know that the manifolds on the 205 were always reckoned to be on of the best around and peeps did not change these until high states of tune. i am assuming this is not the case from what you say?
cheers,

definatly go for eibachs/bilstein suspension! i'd be careful with upping the power to much as the gearbox's are on the limit as it is.i had a full magnex and de-cat on my saxo vts (same car) and it did sound very good! i'd concentrate on improving the handling and stopping as these little cars will embarrass very expensive and powerfull cars on the twisty's
oh and if i remember right superchips do almost nothing for this engine and dastek is the one to have!

thanks Peachy - i know exactly what you are saying in regard to getting the things to handle better and stop well. they really do suprise those with more exotic machienery!
my 205 1.6 ' s that i had over the years certainly are testimony to that !
i had the bilstein setup and pagid stoppers - tres' bien!
i will do a search for Dastek, what is the sort of gain one can expect.
i am suprised the gearbox's are weak - the 205 'boxs are virtually bullet proof.

mista - gmc motorsport are pretty good for these motors - http://www.gmcmotorsport.co.uk
as for Dastek - do a google search and find your nearest dealer.
Procomp kits are indeed cold air fed - I wouldn't bother with anything that isn't, as has already been said you'll loose power otherwise. I've not heard of the g/box being a particular weak spot on them either
Do all the above (plus some cams) and it'll be a flyer

I had a Magnex full system (not de cat) and a Jetex Response induction with a cold feed pipe. On two different RR I got 138 bhp. Eventually had a Superchip fitted - don't bother, it made no difference except for a little bit more mid-range torque.

Piper or Kent possibly schrick (sp)..
LAD motorsport were pretty good when I had my 106..
Get the heads done +supersprint manifold.
Suspension and brakes makes more difference tho.

If I were your mate I'd keep it as simple as possible.
The 106 GTi really is one awesome little car - I currently have a VX220 Turbo and still think back to the purity of the 106 I owned a few years ago.
A set of bilsteins shocks, eibach springs, a set of ultra light 14" alloys with sports tyres (SO2's if you can get hold of them) and uprated brakes (Pagid RS14 pads) and you'll have one of the best/purest cars on the road that will cover ground as fast as much more powerful machinery.
If you're wanting a bit more noise then the supersprint manifold + magnex full system will give you lots of
Tell him to watch for the lambda sensor and for faulty head gaskets - both were well known problems when I had mine...

Oh yes forgot about head work talk to these guys about that: http://www.hiflowheads.co.uk/
LAD undoubtably do pretty good work, just don't whatever you do believe their bhp claims The usual suspects for cams - Piper or Kent, just don't expect to go too wild with the profile or you'll need work doing on the pistons.
As for suspension, decent quality shocks and springs up front and get the rear beam lowered a touch to match. Again don't go too low or you'll screw up the handling - 40mm is about the max for go rather than show.

i was thinking of 2 notches on the rear beam and 25 mm front eibachs as in my 205 gti (with billies of course )
probably worth fitting a new lambda sensor with any major head work that might be done don't you think?

does anyone have a view on the BTB fyll exhaust system on the GMC website (link above) versus the usual magnez/scorpion systems?
i notice that the BTB has a box to replace the cat as opposed to a cat replacement pipe in the other systems.

Had a 106 gti before the scoob, had a Pipercross Viper Induction kit wouldnt recommend it, didnt make a diffrence in sound or performance, also had a twin tailpipe magnex exhaust which did make it look and sound sweet, then i did the most stupidist thing and stuck a set of 17" alloys on and it took away the handling big time and the car seemed slower, so id stick with the standard alloys, sort the suspension, brakes and if you can afford it i heard throttle bodies are the way to go, and would give a CTR a run for its money.
