Default sl55 Amg

Saw one of these on saturday, nice looking car, 4 big old pipes sticking out the back
Unfortunately the driver didn't want to play, i am just wondering how silly i would have looked if he had, anyone know anything about the performance of these beasts?

Lots of power and torque 500bhp + 516lbs. 0-60 about 4.5 secs and 1-100 about 10 secs. Heavy though so not so good in the twisties. Power really comes in above 60mph when not a lot will stay with it. German mag tested with the limiter removed and got to 202mph. Sounds fantastic. Can be chipped to 600bhp but most people are happy with standard. Although the SL65 is out later in the year and that really is a beast with an additional 100bhp!!!

the difference between a AMG and Braus is normal a min of 200 bhp but it all depends on how deep the customs pocket was as you can tell them how much you want and they will make it for you to your spec from the chassis up

Tried to have a play with one of these whilst in the Tuscan last week.
Again, he wasn't interested though.
Now that would have been a scalp worth taking

Would trash a Scooby in the dry on the twisties - Merc adaptive damping is outstanding!

Would be close I reckon between the Tuscan and the Merc from about 80 upwards. From standstill you'd destroy him though mate

I remember Evo put a SL55 up against a Caterham on a handling course, very little to separate them. This car WILL eat most Scoobs on straights, twisties lumpies, bumpies etc...

Not entirely true.

On track there are a number of cars that can perform very well, but our roads aren't in quite as good condition as many of the UK's tracks. Bumps or pot holes mid-corner can throw a heavy car off line very easily.

The SL55 is a hugely impressive car and on anything that resembles a nice smooth surface it will demolish most things. But on our bumpy roads I reckon a 4wd Rally Rep would have a good chance of keeping up.

Then again, I may be talking out of my ****!

The SL55 is not great on bumpy surfaces and gets put off line by pot holes etc. The electronics do improve the handling but it is still a very big heavy car to chuck around country lanes.

Who told you it's not good when bumpy? It is a big heavy car but with all the electronics it's got, not a lot will live with it.

I've said before, Autocar did their Performance Car of the Year award and it was bested only by a Murciellago and (just) 575 Maranello on track. Was quicker (bar trackday special Radicals etc) than everything else, TVRs included

And this was a "std" SL55 of course. SL65 would be a fair bit quicker I'd imagine.

My brother is going through the process of buying one of these , its the F1 pace car spec, 550bhp and 550lbs, sounds awsome , it will be interesting to see how it compares to the 996T (with X50 pack) its replacing.

Think its gonna be a damn close call, personally the 996 is more my kind of machine, but each to their own i guess.

????

I'd have thought a heavy car is LESS likely to be thrown off line by pot holes etc.

Something like my westie is more susceptible (sp?) to pot holes than any other car I've driven. However once things are thrown off line it's easier to quickly adjust a lighter car to get back on line.

The latest Merc G Wagon (tin box) has 469BHP - maybe a scoob will beat that in the twisties..

Ok guys let see have any of you driven one of these?

They are superb. No other way about them. Stonkingly quick. You cant compare an Impreza to these.

The SL55 with eat these alive. The damping technology is awesome. On test drive on the IOM it just kept saying "More More More!!!"

Fantastic. Dream car!

Indeed - I used to have an CLK430 V8 - and that was quick enough to beat many "performance" cars 50mph and above

Currently drive an SL55 which replaced my modded RS4. It is very easy to drive, more than enough power but is more of a GT than a sports car due to its size and weight. Only negative is that you cant fit a set of golf clubs in the boot and some of the early ones suffered from spurious electrical problems due to the amount of technology crammed into it. Currently doing about 17mpg!!
