Thinking of getting an M5 but for the budget the mileages could be a little higher e.g. 70 to 80k. I oly average about 10k per annum these days. Anyone know of any problems on the cars at this mileage and beyond? Anything I should be looking out for

I looked into this as was thinking of one either instead of or as well as the Scooby, insurance will be easier when I am 30 later in the year though (heavily modified Euro Scooby with more power/torque and far less weight = far quicker than the M5 is far easier to insure!)

Most suggest getting them with a BMW warranty which IIRC covers up to 100000 miles. I suspect you would save in the long run by going for lower mileage in the 25-28K range rather than the leggy 20-25K examples.

VANOS problems can be expensive. They all use a bit of oil because of piston design but there is a low oil level warning or level display so hopefully they won't have run dry.

My 2001 M5 has covered 56000 miles without any problems, it doesn't use a lot of oil and the Vanos system is fine. It was mainly the pre 2001 models which suffered from high oil consumption and vanos problems.

I've had mine for 14 months know and I absolutley love it, it is such an amazing all rounder. Great for motorway cruising, loads of room for the family and a real hoot round the track.

The main items that people look out for are the colour and the spec. The comms. pack is a must, this incldes the TV, SAT NAV etc. and the individual sound system is excellent. I also wanted one with the double glazed windows as it is so quiet on the motorways.

The only real problem is the depreciation, I reckon I've lost 8K in the 14 months since I've owned mine.

Not an M5, I know, but my 635 CSi has covered over 265000 miles on its original engine and still runs as strongly as it did when new in 1982. Its like everything else...if you look after it properly and drive it properly, you will have trouble free motoring for many many thousands of miles....

Cheers lads - Dom, I feel for you on the depreciation side, but from a buyers (like me) point of view it brings the M5 into my price range. I have been on the other side having taken a £30k hit on a new TVR Cerbera a few years back - ouch!!
