thinking of getting a 1996/1997 model,
I know they look good especially with the leather interior,
just wondering on running costs and what they go like,

A mate of mines got the 2.6 version and it ain't no slouch their about 178BHP and the 2.8 run's at about 198BHP and I'm running around in a 270+ Grale and the A4 didn't feel slow, the 4X4 did it's job as he took me out around some twistys. And it's dead luxurious inside as well the wife asks why couldn't I have bought one in stead

cheers redevo, they do seem like a bargain at the moment, just wondering if there was any reason why they are so cheap, I've had the 1.8 20 valve turbo lump in a vw passat and didnt think much of it tbh, so I'm hoping the big v6 would be better, and of course with the 4 wheel drive

They're not all that fast, tbh, and they like a drink. Have had the A6 quattro version - averaged 24mpg, and needed revving to get it to go. Cruised wonderfully well, but not a sportster. A4 may be better, being that bit lighter.
Beautifully made though, and cheap to run (servicing approx £150 at a non-franchised specialist) other than fuel and insurance. Just watch out for things like broken electric seats or headlamp adjusters - cost the earth - and knackered front track rod ends (actually suspension arms have to be bought complete) cost me £300 at MOT time.
Great car though, and fantastic to own, if not especially inspiring to drive.

They are cheap as everone wants a diesel these days, lovely car, mate has an Audi 80 2.6 estate, it sounds superb but does cost him a bit in fuel, I say bollocks to it, get a petrol and let the missus have a diesel !

Rev, he probably didnt notice you cause he was listening to mozart on his bose stereo system and was nice and relaxed in the recaro style leather seats, while you on the other hand was trying to blow up a poor little 1.3 ka

I have the turbo'ed version of this engine (sleeved to 2.7 with twin turbos) running 400BHP and I average 23 with 27mpg on a run. To get 18mpg from a NA 2.8 is amazing....
Both the S4 & RS4 are sleeved versions of this motor.

Tried one many years ago for a day. So soggy, poor suspension control (kept bottoming it), but very smooth and luxurious. Horses for courses.

18 was 5% motoraway, 20% in town and the rest on A/B roads.....as a comparison i get EXACTLY the same economy in any give situation from my 540. i can live with it in a 4.4 V8 but not in a 2.8 V6.

Had a 3.0 quattro - agree with everything said here - it went back cos it was just too heavy - spoilt the driving experience eventually - at first you think they're great but after a while it starts to feel like you're in a safe sofa on wheels ! Don't get me wrong - this sofa could move very quickly indeed - but it would put me to sleep eventually - which is a shame cos they're lovely !
Horses for courses again !
I'll get another one when I'm 50 (or maybe 60)
