Default 944 as runabout?

Sounds crazy but I'm considering it, had a drive in my friends 944S on a D plate and was very impressed with it, although it wasn't as fast as my Impreza it had a great GT car feel in the cockpit and was surprisingly practical with the 2 rear seats folded down.
As my MK2 Golf is dying I'm considering replacing it with the 944, insurance is only £100 more than the Golf, fuel consumption not important as it won't be used for high mileages.
I'd be interested in comments on maintenance costs for the car, obviously they won't be cheap but hopefully not to expensive either.
If anyone has any links to BBS/magazine articles I'd be very interested to see them.

I had a 944 Lux on the D-reg. Insurance and petrol were the cheapest ever paid on a car. Easily does 35mpg. As for parts and servicing I couldnt justify £400 a service at porsche on a 4k car but there are loads of specialists out there who are well known and will do this for half the price. As for parts have a look at eurocarparts.co.uk and see that they cost no more thana 3-series BMW.

I walked up to the teller, I gave her the letter
She gave me the loot, with puckered up lips
In a way that I found cute, and I said...
Baby...baby...baby...Is there some Karmic G love thing happening here honey or what?

Plenty of Independants about to keep costs down. If you buy a good one you will be OK.

I would avoid the 16 valve "S", and look at the 8 valve 2.5 engine to keep costs down.

I run a 1990 Turbo daily with no problems - 20k Miles in 17 months.

Hartech are an independent Porsche specialist in the UK and have a VERY detailed buyers guide at the above address. Get yerself a coffee, sit down & read ... it's a very honest document.

couple of buying guides -
http://www.chpltd.com/911_porsche_wo...tures_944.html
http://www.pistonheads.com/porsche/d...p?storyId=6090

Mine is a turbo, but servicing costs are pretty similar to the NA models. 12 month service is about £250 from an independent. The turbo then requires an additional oil service at 6 months. Parts are relatively inexpensive from numerous specialist suppliers, eg brake pads c £30.
Mine has been very reliable, but you do need to bear in mind that these are 15-20 year old cars. I just had to fit a new steering rack and clutch master cylinder as the seals went - probably due to the previous owner's lack of use of the car.
Assuming you find a good car to begin with, it should be pretty cheap motoring. Any extra you pay for servicing should be offset by the lack of depreciation.

thanks for the links- very helpful. Now just need to decide if the D plate 'S' I have in mind is a bad 'un or a good 'un.

I would agree with Davyboy

the 2.5S 16v costs a bit more to service and has the complexity of the 16v engine without a huge amount of increase in performance.

Go for a 2.5 8v or a 2.7 8v (more torque)
If you do go for the 2.5S make sure it has had it's cam chain tensioner changed. This is NOT part of the normal service schedule. If it hasn't had it done get it done ASAP as the consquences can be very expensive.

Hi Neil. I was tempted to go back to Byfleet, but the rad has a slight leak at the moment and although I have a replacement I have been too lazy to fit it! I am concentrating on the suspension at the mo - new rubber mounts all round and new rear shocks. Once that's done I'll get it back on the rollers to confirm I have found those elusive ponies
