due to the surge, i heard from an AA bloke years ago, that the car i had, shouldnt jump my Dads Scorpio as it would blow the ECU. !! so was just questioning it. I dont have any idea. Just that i reckon a Shogun would have an ECU.

There is always a "possibility" but I have never seen it happen.
The only time I can see it happen is if you unwittingly Jump start a car off a truck that has 24volt electrics, or one of the vehicles has a faulty alternator.
Bear in mind modern ECU's have to cope with potential faults in the igntion system where a HT spark (100000000's of volts) could leak into the LT trigger circuitry for the coil packs.
You can minimalise any potential risk by jump starting with the doner vehicles engine OFF! But obviously if the doner vehicles battery is weak, you can risk having two flat batteries You can also get "protected" jump leads.
Also connecting the earth lead to the engine block helps.

I have heard it said that the ECU could be damaged although I have not seen it happen yet. I would think that if you connect the jump leads to the dead car's battery then the low battery should absorb any possible surge. You could have the live car's engine running so it is charging the dead battery before you switch the dead car's ignition on. It should all be stabilised before you switch the dead car's ignition on then. I think the danger might come if you were using one of those high capacity transformers to jump start the car, that might put a high voltage into the system.

if you join to another car battery, there is no more chance of a surge than there is from your own car battery surging when you start the engine.
I wouldn't worry about it.
And we jumped started my dads scorpio before and never had a problem
