Do you need a full manual license for these cars???

Andy- No is the short answer, you can even drive a manual that has had an aftermarket electric/hydraulic clutch fitted as long as the clutch pedal is removed.

Ideally the clutch pedal should be "quick release and fit" to allow the car to be driven via the foot clutch when needed by somebody who holds a qualifying license.

There is a lot of confusion about.

The tiptronic is a full Autobox anyway and doesn't have a clutch, it's just an auto with a driver gear change system.

Systems like Alfa's selespeed, Ferrari's F1, BMW's SMG, etc that use a manual box with actuators and computer controlled clutch "Should" be classed as an auto.

It's best to check on the V5 document as to what it's been registered as. Some dealers have wrongly registered these cars as manuals.

If you go for a test drive make sure it's a long one as they do take some getting used to and will feel a bit clummsy at first.

Cheers

Andy- As I've said, your friend can have the pick of any car.

I owned a 500+hp Cosworth on hand-controls and an electric clutch.

One of the few really powerful but inexpensive auto cars is the mkiv supra. It has 300+bhp as standard and is easily tuned. The autobox can be used like a sequential, it gives engine braking and is very fast to change. There is even a tiptronic option on the 1998 onwards models which is a button control version of almost the same box.

Theres 2 cars in the club that have full hand controls fitted and if your friend wants a seriously quick car for a reasonable amount of money its well worth considering.

Head over to www.mkivsupra.net/bbs if you have any other questions about the supra.

Hi, I am the subject of this discussion essentially

Unfortunately I only have one hand so an electric clutch/etc wouldn't work. I'm not even sure how easy it would be to use paddleshifts etc, but I'd like to have a go. Had enough of my Pug estate

Thanks for the info regarding how licenses work though. Useful to know that Automatic = no clutch, rather than something more complicated.

Cheers,

Steev

Steev- Alternatively you can find many good auto's, you won't go far wrong with an auto Impreza.

Just make sure a car you like has got a turbo with at least a 2 litre capacity or at least 3 litres of normal aspiration to feel decent.

Auto's in small capacity engines are what most people judge auto's by and it's way off the mark.

As Tiggs said above, plant your foot in a big engined auto and you are away.

I owned a 928S4 which was the best steer and go fun in the land.
