How the fark is it laid out? I thought you needed opposing cylinders in the v shape?

diff size cylinders

 

Two banks, one 3 cylinder the other 2 cylinder. all the same sized cylinders with crankshaft weights and balancers shafts cancelling out the vibration.

 

always thought the V5 stood for 5 valves per cylinder

 

I wont ask what you thought about a V8 then?...

 

i belive its referred to as an "inline v" ?? i had one last year but still not 100% sure, hwoever looking at the engine there was no signs of a v, it was inline with a single head

 

VW's V5 and VR6 are closely related, they're a very narrow angle V which allows them to run a single head, but the cylinders are staggered (according to VW promo blurb anyway, I've never actually seen either engine )

Sort of like (looking from above):

Rather than a normal 6 that's more like:

The W8 is also based on the same idea, it's really 2 banks of 4 run staggered to create a narrower, shorter engine than a normal V8.

And 20V would be 5 valves per cylinder

Thanks. My boss has a Toledo V5, we just wondered what made a V5 ! I thought it was just a badge name and irrelevant to the usual V6/V8 etc.

It`s a 15 degree Vee which does indeed have just one cylinder head.

On the Golf V5 it has three cylinders in the forward bank and two behind which are squeezed in tight.
