Default True performance diesel?

I've seen a new 535 diesel at my local BMW dealership a little digging has revealed the figures for the car 272 bhp and 413 lb ft torque.

A true performance diesel? Sounds good.

Just got the details at work, its a Twin-Turbo 3.0l diesel, you are right about the output, 0-62mph is 6.6 secs, rev limit is now 4800rpm. Its EU4 compliant too. That's all the details for now though, as BMW have yet to release anything more.

It may look like a big taxi, but if cubes and torque are what you want then get down to your VW dealer and have a drive in the Pheaton V10...

Engine cubic capacity 4921
Fuel Consumption
Urban 17.1mpg - 16.5l/100km
Extra-urban 33.2mpg - 8.5l/100km
Combined 24.8mpg - 11.4l/100km
Engine emissions 308g/km
Engine noise levels 70.0dB
Engine maximum Speed 155mph - 250km/h
Engine acceleration 0-62mph 6.9secs
Maximum output PS 313
at RPM 3750
Maximum torque 553 lbs.ft / 750 Nm
at RPM 2000
Insurance group rating n/a

That's five hundred and fifty pounds feet of torque.....

If I ever get the cash, I'd love to graft a standard Passat TDi bodyshell onto the V10 motor & drivetrain. Would be a fun Q-car

Wonder what the tuners will be able to remap the BMW & Phaeton motors to?

Nacro,

No such thing as a performance diesel. LOL

Sounds good to me. I'll be waiting for that engine to come out in a 3 series shell. Now that should be entertaining. Never going to happen though Still, I might take a test drive in the 5er and see if it's got what it takes.

Looks like you are wrong now BMW are bringing this car to the market.

Up until now of course diesels have generally been fairly tardy, apart from the Alpina we've all talked about. Of course if you want to talk modified the playing field changes somewhat. The point here is that the diesel 5 is going to be quick out of the box.

As I've said before on these sort of threads I'm very keen to see some quick diesels and it looks as if the game has been moved on by BMW. Should please the 3+5 series diesel owners who I regularly destroy in my old Impreza.

Nacro.

Agreed that this moves the game on, but in reality the 535d is just over half a second quicker to 60 than my 330d and is limited to a top speed 4 mph faster than my 330d. The mid-range shove of 413ft/lbs will be great. Of course, as stated previously by you and others, "in-gear" and "real world" acceleration once rolling, means nothing to Impreza owners. I'd be surprised if the 535d was super quick to 100 either.

The problem is, as always, that we're looking at on paper figures. They look impressive, but tell us absolutely nothing. It's only because you've seen 272bhp and 413 ft/lbs of torque that you actually think it's going to be a performance car. A very blinkered approach really.

My 330d leaves WRX owners asking where the Subarus mid-range grunt is. I suspect that the 535 will do the same to STI owners. However, as you and a number of other Scooby owners have been so keen to point out, off the line, the BMW stands no chance. You'd argue that if you can't win from a standing start, where's the performance? ROFL. Poor misguided rice boys.

No I wouldn't, I'd argue that if the car didn't perform well from a standing start then it is missing a vital element that makes it a performance car.

As for midrange grunt I find that it is perfectly adequate in my car it being a 'classic', certainly enough to cane a 330D at any speed. Or so my 'real world' experiences have shown.

I think you'll also find that I didn't say I thought it was a performance car, I merely asked the question based on the figures, perhaps you can try reading what I put before commenting on something that isn't there?

The new 5 diesel also features a higher rev limit and according to the blurb the twin turbo's mean there is little lag. Again I ask a true performance diesel? We'll have to wait and see as it seems nobody here has any idea.
