maestro turbo

For 5K you could buy one, tune it, have a 13sec car and still have change. and they get quicker with every piece of rust that falls off.

Easy. 106 GTI or Saxo VTS. Both amazing fun, both can be had for your budget and both are around group 14 insurance. Drive them one after the other and decide which you prefer and if you can't tell the difference flip a coin

If I sold my car just now I'd be straight on the phone to 'Sulli' who is (i think) still selling his 106 GTI with some tasty mods for around £5k

VTS is a very fun car to drive and pretty quite too, 7.7 to 60 I think. Its group 14 tho, if ur worried about that, the VTR is also very good fun and half the insurance group at grp 7.

106 Gti is nice and rarer, but possibly looks more dated than the saxo?

SaxoBoy,

That is certainly not a fake Testarossa! LOL Nice to see on in Grigio rather than the usual Rosso Corsa.

Mk2 Golf GTI 8v

Lot's of potential, as well as lots of cars to choose from.

Maybe not the quickest, but I love the looks, the engine, the handling, etc, etc!

How about a rover 200vi, 1.8 litre VVC, 145bhp and does 0-60 in 7.5s book figure (autocar tested it at 7.1secs), can pick them up for between 3-5k. Very understated looks too.

Or if you dont mind the styling, Rover 200 BRM, okay i know its got a big orange grill and red leather, buts it got the same 1.8 VVC engine, 145bhp with the addition of a LSD, lower ride height and uprated shocks and springs, although as only 750 where sold in the uk prices are much higher than an equivalent 'vi', so your looking at about £4.5k and up.

Renault 5 gt turbo. Cheap as chips, but prices are starting to rise on!! Group 14 insurance, 0-60 in 7.3. And NOT as unreliable as everyone thinks. As long as you look after them, they'll look after you

saxos = cr@p, try the Reanult 5 GTT, well worth the money, just bought a std ph1 GTT D reg 58k miles ont he clock, cracking car. £1900 boost raised to 12psi with bigger jets in the carb doing 0-60 in 6ish seconds, great fun cars if u can put up with a few rattles

I drive the saxo and the R5 on a daily basis, the saxo is my misses and tbh it just aint any fun the R5 winds everytime, I make any excuse to get in it

cheers guys, some interesting suggestions there.

ok, to make it a bit more specific, its got to be a hatch.

preferably, have lots of tuning bits available for it and cheap spares.

must admit im thinking a VTS at the minute. can anybody persuade me otherwise?

Well the vi / BRM are still there on the hatch front, but fall down hopelessly on the tuning parts, Due to the VVC engie there is very little out there for it.

Apart from the larger throttle body from the 160 version of this engine, there really isnt much out there at all. Very few chipping options due to the MEMS ecu aswell.

Why would they want to its an amazingly fun car to drive. Monster front end grip, go-kart handling and you can change her attitude and direction very easily with the throttle. Lots of fun to be had

The guy who said cappuccino had it right.
If a guy who has owned godzilla(as in the skyline 600bhp)and a 355 david yu has 1 its gotta be good.
0-60 8 seconds Tdi do hks bits from turbos to dump valves
but it looks like a shrunken dodge viper.

200sx is great but is group 17 insurance.

civic vtec hatch and spoon or mugan bits.

Meastro turbo looks like **** of a shovel but goes like it to 0-60 6.8 139mph

Why becuase if its anything like the girlfriends VTR they are probably the worst built car in the world. Everything is made of plastic and rattles like mad. Every single bit of trim seems to make a noise.

Nothing seems to last on them either. Weve had it since new, and the radiator went after 2 years, the whole front supension setup has been replaced (leaking shocks, dodgy top mounts, 2 sets of wishbones)

The dealers are crap.... incredibly crap. Just dont go near one if you have a problem.

Infact if you look on topgear duffers section there are loads of VTR's / VTS's with problems.

To drive though, they are great fun. Just a shame youve got to be a midget to sit comfortably infront of the lovely steering wheel.

Aside from some teething problems my VTS was fine and rattled less than my scooby. In some places the build quality was better than the impreza as well. They aren't the most spacious or most comfortable of cars but they defo meet the criteria of most fun (quickest) car for under or around group 14 insurance IMHO
