Question

Just wondering if anyone has driven/owns the 3.2 version of either the A3 or TT, and what their thoughts were compared to the old 1.8T.

Not so much interested in those models, but I understand that Audi plan to base the next S3 on the same engine so may be interested. My boss has the 210bhp S3, so wondering how they were likely to compare - of course might hang on to see if the rumoured RS3 is given the go ahead

Cheers,

Gareth

Yep got mine on Saturday. Did 400 miles in 24 hours. It's nearly run in now. Haven't been above 4,000rpm, so can only do 107mph, but it's excellent so far, very quick/stable on fast A and B roads and supremely stealthy.

p.s. don't know what is going to happen with the rumoured S3. I heard it was getting the 4.2 V8, but I think a small turbo on the V6 would be the way to go. Don't see the point in the TT, £5k more to look like a tart on an older chassis.

Thanks for that ....agree about the TT, I wouldn't buy one, but did look at the original S3 when I looked at the Scooby, it was on my recommendation that the boss bought his, mainly due to the higher quality and design, still quick but a bit softer.

Any idea when an official announcement on the new S3 may be made? I'm assuming it won't be until the end of the year at least, which would tie in with me thinking about changing the car.

Any other Audi owners with info to add ?
Cheers

There are a few threads on this on Pistonheads and http://www.rs246.com/ but basically it's all chat and nobody knows. Not sure where they'd position an S3/RS3 in the model range as the S4 is the equivalent of the current M3. Surely it'd have to be cheaper. I'd have one anyway

I think that the RS3 Avant version of the A3 will nick some STi8 / Evo8 sales.

Yep, certainly...I'm in a STi8 ppp at the moment, but I think I'll be taking a very close look at the new Audi models when I decide to change

apart from you cant beat the sound of the new 3.2, id rather have the 225 1.8 and chip it...more power lighter and better on fuel IMHO.

Mate has just got a 3.2 TT. I am normally of the thinking TT's are too girlie and two a penny these days., but I've got to say I am impressed with his. It sounds bloody lovely, and looks great in the graphite colour he's chosen.

Actually makes it almost fit for a bloke!!

I'd therefore pay the extra £5k for the engine and gear box.

There isn't going to be a new S3, only an RS3. The new 3.2 is the direct replacement for the S3.

The RS3 will hopefully be out mid / late 2005.

Pays to visit the Audi factory once in a while.

No it isn't, Audi have been at pains to make it clear the 3.2 A3 isn't replacing the old S3.

I ordered a new A3 yesterday and test drove everything both garages had other the past 2 days.

I ended up going for the 1.6 fsi sport, as the 2.0 was a real dissapointment and Im not a fan or diesels. ALlthought the 2.0 tdi was quicker than i expected.

Plus the 1.6 will cost me a whole £7 a month as the tax is only just above what my company pays you as a lump sum each month for having the company car.

The 3.2 did sound fantastic and it had the s line pack on and dsg, it was a fantastic car and did stand out. Although the salesman was with me so I couldnt test it out fully. But it did shift and the 3.2 lump didnt affect the handling as much as I expected either.

When I dissed the 2.0 fsi as saggy performance for a 2.0 litre car, the Salesman actually agreed and said they are bringing out a 2.0 fsi turbo version which will also be the basis for the new golf gti (its the golf GT model available now not the Gti). I asked will this be the S3 model / replacement, and he said there is no plans to bring out a new s3 model as the 2.0fsi turbo will probably not be quattro power?.

but he was a salesman and they do normally spout brown stuff

The 3.2 does seem to like a drink. Got 28 mpg on a gentle 80-90mph long motorway run and has settled at about 24mpg after a few days town use. Wish I'd gone for the DSG option now as it would really suit the engine characteristics.

There will be no new S3. The 3.2 is the replacement as the top spec A3 available (until the RS3).

Question

If there isn't going to be a new S3, do you have any idea what the spec of the RS3 is likely to be? .... turbo'd V6/twin turbo'd V6/ V8 ?

I appreciate this is all rumoured and unofficial, and may be pure guesswork !!

Only 280bhp, that's gonna be an expensive 30bhp. Is that from a reliable source?
Finally got round to opening the bonnet yesterday and there's plenty of room for a turbo

"Only" 280bhp? Thats pretty good power from a 3.2, yes I know M3's squeeze more power out but it should be fast in an A3 sized car.

AmD tune this engine using just a freer flowing exhaust, cat and remap to get 270bhp, although Audi will probably do some headwork and maybe hotter cam profiles to meet power figures without breaking the poncy sound limits.

Sounds like it will be a really nice car. Maybe used 1.8T S3s won't be so overpriced by the time it comes out.
