Question

Anyone know what diesels are available, with in particular the mpg, BHP and torque?

It's the new shape ones I'm thinking of - i.e.:

Think I found it - 2.5 140BHP, 214 thingy of torque at 3000 revs.

Thumbs up

Not 100% certain but I think the "old" 2.5 TDi motor might have found its way into a few new-shape V70s. If so, these will badged as 2.5 TDi.

This older motor is a Volvo development of an Audi 5-cylinder diesel. It's not as refined as latest-generation diesels but is still very grunty. IIRC it's 145bhp and about 230lb-ft of torque, and 40-ish MPG from a manual version.

I reckon most new-shape V70s will have the new D5 motor (badged simply as 'D5'). This is a ground-up Volvo design, 5 cylinders and 2.4 litres. 163 bhp and 255 lb-ft of torque, around 40-45mpg.

I've had a day-long test drive of the S60 D5, it's a great motor. Huge grunt -- peak torque is at just 1750rpm -- and very refined too. You wouldn't know its a diesel when on the move, and even at idle it's not bad. Sounds good too.

If you go to Diesel Car and click on A-Z Test Drives you can d/l a long term test from there.

Cheers for that Brickboy - exactly what I was after!

163BHP & 255 lbs-ft torque - that's more like it Love the S60's too, but the opening aperture on the boot is even worse than my Passat

I currently own an X-reg V70 2.5 TDi SE. Brilliant car, with a nice sounding engine at all times except when freezing cold as normal. Motorway journeys are a joy as the engine noise just disapears and the seats are wonderful.

Overtaking grunt is great, and I've also skinned some Nova's off the line (much to their surprise as well as my own).

Ours has done 70,000 miles now with no problems whatsoever. the D5 is a great engine too, but at a premium. Nothing wrong with the old tried and testing Audi 5-cyl.

140BHP and lots of torque.
