Well, due to being unemployed for the last 4 months and no sign of a job yet, I'll be selling the Impreza soon to free up some cash. This means that I'll need to replace it with something to "get me about" and I'll have £2k to spend. Me being me, I don't want anything normal, but I will have to satisfy MrsREV's criteria of it being "practical" although this is a grey area which I can stretch a point in.

So far my addled brain has come up with the following, just to give you an idea of how warped I am:

Toyata Hi-Lux -

Pros - I need to hire a skip to clear a load of garden rubbish and a load of junk from the garage. I figure I can buy a Hi-Lux, use it for a month or 2 and sell it for what I paid.

Cons - Slow, doesn't handle

Rover SD1 Vitesse -

Pros - The car I always wanted as a kid. Quick, comfy, nice V8 sound

Cons - rusty, high mileage

Nissan 200SX S13 -

Pros - Quick and tuneable

Cons - Thrashed and rusty (according to sxoc)

Range Rover "Classic" -

Pros - I've always had this fantasy about a bird in jodphurs, a riding crop and the back of a Rangey...oh and it's got a V8 in it.

Cons - High mileage, they're a bit ****

My mate Ste's old Baja Beetle for £250 -

Pro's - It's cheap, it's cool in an ironic way

Cons - it hasn't run for 10 years, it'd be kind of embarrasing for a 30 year old to drive.

Any comments on the above or new suggestions gladly welcomed.

Get a saab 9000 or 900 - you can lug things around in a 9000 - pig ugly box though - normally pay £900 for a good one that will last forever.

I doubt you'll find an SD1 that hasn't rusted to death - last one I drove the PAS was way to sensitive and I ended up zig-zagging down the road

I'll have to second the Saab 9000 idea. great cars with immense loading capacity. Plus, the 2.3T really does go well. 200bhp standard with the aero having 225bhp.

Can get some great bargains too:
I sold my '92 9000CS 2.3T with 195000miles for £1500. It had even been professionally modified by Abbot Racing.
Oh, just to clarify, 195000miles on these cars is no big deal if serviced regulary.

Cheers
Brett

Saab 9000T, Lancia Thema LE 16V, Lancia Dedra Turbo, Charade GTti ( my choice), Legacy Turbo, Alfa 164.

Fair bit of choice

Some good suggestions, I'd love an AE86, but would I get one for under £2k (if I cold find one at all!)

I'm almost tempted by a Saab, but they're a bit more "normal" than I was intending

I love that Dolomite V8, but I won't have the money until the WRX is sold.

I did find a nice Rover P6 3500S made the year I was born. MrsREV declared it "big and old" with her nose wrinkled in disgust. Telling her it was the Impreza of it's day didn't help

Exclamation

I'm considering a 1991 Honda CRX at the moment!

150bhp (not bad for a 1.6), still looks ok (despite being old!) and important that V-TEC fun/scream!

Plenty of the late ones can be had for around £2k.

Whoops, forget it!! I just read you needed something 'practical' so the bookshelf rear seat and shoebox boot really don't fulfill your criteria!

New one on my list is the good old Rover 620Ti, I used to have one as a company car and would happily have another and there's loads of decent ones about for £2000.

Still, that Dolomite does look tempting...

Andy, a CRX counts as practical in my world. Impractical was the Pro-Street 7 litre supercharged Dodge Dart she wouldn't let me buy instead of the Impreza...
