Is anyone here into the old Corolla Twin Cams? I'm trying to gather as much info about them as possible.

Trueno Sprints? There seems to be all sorts of names which is whats confusing me, did they do different levels of the model, perforamnce wise or is a twin cam a twin cam?
Look like big fun all the same!

120hp, RWD LSD and oversteer on demand, easy to control hence why they are popular for drift competitions....

www.fensport.co.uk do all the tuning bits for them too....

Yeah, great cars, mines still off the road after a bump in January. Angrybeats is correct, great cars, revvy/gutsy motor, close gears, feelsome steering, oversteer on demand and sometimes when you don't want it

The sprinters were the japaneze and US version. The AE86 corollas were the ones that got to the UK. You can tell as the sprinters have pop up lights, thats the easiest way to spot the difference.

They have the 1600 16v twin cam 4-AGE engine. As used in mk1 MR2s and in some early fwd corollas. 120bhp,

The japs also had the 4-AGZE enigine which was supercharged as standard and 170bhp. Never driven this version though...

afaik the GZE was not fitted to the AE86 though, only later fwd models. Of course it fits straight in the AE86 with a few simple mods, swirl pot is recommended, and a few other bits I forget.

Also the AE92 20valve motor fits in quite nicely, 160bhp of n/a power and silly rev limits.

Early 4A-GE was 124bhp (like mine), later ones (as fitted to fwd Corolla/MR2) got revised intake and 129bhp. Even then at 940 ish kgs its still quite rapid for an old car, a good match for early Golf Gti's

Love the AE86 shame about the area it's parked in though, don't you worry about it getting keyed or stolen?

Simon from Japukmeets used to have the supercharged engine in his till he had a prob with the supercharger no one knew how to fix so he flogged it to an interested party. Think he is just running the normal twincam now.

Basically, there are at least 8 versions (I mean different mechanical spec, not trim levels) of the AE8x series.
There's the AE85 Sprinter Trueno/Corolla Levin. This car is fitted with a 1.5 engine that makes about 80ps (it's the car driven by Takumi's best friend in Initial D, his is a AE85 Corolla Levin).
Then there's the AE86 Sprinter Trueno/Corolla Levin, which we all know is the 1st Toyota to use the then-new DOHC 16v A-series engine.
The above 4 versions are multiplied by 2 cos there are 2 bodystyles available for all versions of AE85 & 86 - liftback & Coupe. The Coupe is a lot rarer than the liftback.
The main difference between a Sprinter Trueno & a Corolla Levin is the Sprinter Trueno has pop-up lamps. The Corolla Levin liftback is the bodystyle offered to all export markets bar US/CDN. Therefore all UK-spec cars are similar to Corolla Levin liftbacks in Japan. AFAIK, u can convert a Sprinter Trueno into a Corolla Levin, & vice-versa very easily, provided u can find the parts.
U can also fit the later 20v 4A-GE engine into the AE8x, but I think some mods have to be made to the baulkhead cos the distributor is in a different position.
As a sidenote, the last Corolla Levin/Sprinter Trueno was the AE111. Back in the old days, the Japs like to duplicate nearly-identical cars using different names, e.g. Corolla/Levin, Mark2/Chaser/Cresta, Cedric/Gloria etc. The more lineups a manufacturer offers, the more prowess they have.

They are excellent little cars. I have had a few over the years and although under powered, they can still bring a smile to your face on track days .

No I didnt mate !

As for finding one.... rough cars are easlily found everyday of the week. If you want a mint one though you will probably look a long time (I certainly did), and pay a hefty premium for the right car. I was lucky enough to come across an excellent car with a genuine 44K on the clock.

Over here in Ireland they tend to make alot more than they do over your way, so I guess there aint any point in me looking for ya..... thats of course unless you are prepared to pay that premium.

Good luck with your search !

Ricky !
