This car would be about £40k bought over here, yet according to this website its available for about £21k in Japan, is shipping and import duty gonna cost £20k or am I missing something?

You're looking at circa £32k on the road...

Which doesn't make it a particular bargain, 99's tend to go through auctions at that or less anyway. And there are some sub £30k on autotrader now anyway!

Polabearit

I've always been tempted to import an evo or skyline so am very interested in the costs.
If a car can be sourced in Japan for £21k and costs circa another £11k to get it on the road here, can you please explain where that extra money is going and roughly break it down.

Wink

Things to consider after the purchase price...

Cost of Shipping
Marine insurance
UK Duty at 10% of the above
UK VAT at the standard rate on the cost and import duty
Terminal handling charge
Customs clearance charge
SVA preparation and test (where applicable)
Registration
MOT
12 months Road fund license.

yep as mentioned above the cost of my car in Japan has nearly doubled by the time i will get hands on it. Many less reputable sites/importers advertise price in Jap which is all well & good if you can sort the red tape SVA etc out yerself & you may still get cheaper than paying sum1 else to di it but for me http://www.neweraimports.com/ was the cunning plan & so far no regrets i have myself a sweet car being prepared for my collection with no hassle & i no exactly where i stand with £ from the word go & so i get a top notch car for less than it'd cost in the UK & i have no worries about quality unlike some of the cheaper options/importers, though there are a few other good ones out there b4 i tarnish everyone with that brush lol

Lightbulb

The approx calculation I used was -

Car Price 4190000 Yen - @ 186 yen/£ = £22526
Agent Fee - 100000 Yen - = £538
Internal Shipping - 1500 Yen - £81
Shipping to UK - £600
So total in Japan - £23745
+ Duty @ 10% = £26120
+ Vat @ 17.5% on everything = £30691 landed in the UK

Then you've got fees (eg customers clearance) in the UK & Bank fees for JPY conversion - £250
Tax + FRF - £185

+ £500-1000 for SVA Prep + Test

And you're soon up around £32k! Obviously savings are better if you don't have to SVA cars (so they are more than 10 years old)
