I am looking to buy an E36 M3 BMW on and L plate and was wondering if someone could tell me if there are any common faults to look out for and could someone tell me about the vanos.

Also how much would I be looking to pay for a service on one.

No common faults to speak of really. The 1996 onwards EVO's have the Double Vanos issue....but u don't have to worry about that.

Servicing is the costly thing....if it has FBMWSH you will want to keep that up. I know on a non M car, i.e 325i, then your looking at about £100 Oil Service, £200 Inspection 1 and £250+ Inspection 2. And thats at an Indedendant Garage, not BMW. And for an Motorsport car, its alot more I think.

I read somewhere that the Inspection 2 on an M car can cost u £800!! Eeeek!

I had a 98 Evo M3. Inspection II, one new alloy, new brake discs and pads all round, one new tyre. Nothing else wrong...bargain price of £1785 at Sytner in Leicester.

Cheers. One more thing I have seen an M3 that I am interested in but dont know if it is worth the money. It has 90k on the clock and is due a service in 2k miles. it has the M-Tech full leather interior and is L reg and the body work seems to be in good condition. The asking price is £8000. Is that about right??

Have a look at this; http://www.scoobynet.co.uk/bbs/thread.asp?ThreadID=212024

Don't know how to make clicky. The servicing costs are always coming down at the moment as Main Dealers realise owners of older cars are going to specialists. Expect to pay upto £700 for an Inspection II. This is the one where they wheel the car in freezing cold and do the shims etc.

Mail me if you want any other info.
