These look tempting, performance wise, not looks wise as they look like aged mini-cabs with spoliers but are they any good, they start at three grand for a J/K plate Evo 1 with an alleged 250 bhp, how do they stack up to Scoobs of similar advanced years ?

hi

I bought a Evo3 after trying a fare amount of scoobs.Wanted to be a bit differant I guess.

Speed wise they are great.I know I will get flamed saying the following but hey who cares :P

Race a good amount of cars that friends own these inc;

M3 Evo (320bhp) must admit this car was a good race.Just pull by it inch by inch
M5 380bhp same as above
sti@304bhp tight one this. very slightly get past it on accel. He gets me on top end.Evo3 gearing low and at 150mph your doing 7500rpm.
Friends sti runs about 1.5bar
My evo @ .7bar

gear change is ok I thought.Although I have crunched now and then
Handling wise its ok.But understeer comes into play if pushed hard.Plus evo1-3 doesnt have any of the newer evos flashy AYC etc
but then less to go wrong
Evo 1-3 choice for drag runners out of the evo range also due to low starting weight. Evo3 rs for example is about 270bhp and 1190kg

Had a play with a 22b but it was to far infront of me when he booted it for me to gauge speed diff but looked a quick car.Anyone on here?

I wouldn't bother with a 1 or 2 but the 3 is great value. Excellent p/w ratio compared to the later cars.

Totaly off topic but I had a go in a fq300 vers 7 at weekend. It had Motec and a few other mods added. There was absolutely nothing in power wise compared to my modded 6 but the steering, brakes and overall ride was much better.

Carl, how much did you pay for the Yellow beast then, if you dont mind me being nosey ?

I am also interested in whether they are reliable and if they do break what are the chances of getting parts ?

Not to sure on parts as its never broken down and I am not gentle with her to say the least. They are pretty reliable I think.Only thing u do get is when u start them up from cold you sometimes get a 'tappet' type rattle.

No need to worry as long as it goes after 30 secs.

Been told its the lash adjusters and these can be replaced with uprated items.

Body panel wise just find a proton persona all body parts the same I think not inc front wings as the indicator hole is differant.oh and obviously bonnet. Windows the same apart from differant tint on fronts an dno wiper on back(rs didnt have wiper anyways I dont think)

Price wise for a Evo 3 they start from around 6k for a RS upto about 8500 for a mint GSR.

Payed 8k for mine. Alot of money i know and could of got one hell of a scooby for that but this was a year agao and evos hold money for some reason, less choice I suppose.

Not gunna lie this car sux for MPG. But do I care??
Wouldnt say its a great motirway car either due to 5000rpm@100

Dont regret paying that money a single bit.Ok a scooby sounds 300 times better engine wise but when I took my m8 in it that owns a m5 he was impressed.Nuff said

I love the colour just so in ya face

Drive a well looked after one (hard to find I know) and I am sure you will be impressed.

I was going to get an earlier evo, but instead got a hot hatch and saved up for a few years and got an evo VII instead. Not a looker like the old ones, but awesome in every other way.

EVOS ROCK.

Like evoviifan says finding a good early evo is not easy.

I was lucky with mine. Its mint. well 3 chips and slightly fading yellow

Thats untill I hit a bloody kerb and done the front shock/wing in

heres a clip from a review when car was realeased;

New pistons gave an increase in compression ratio [from 8.5:1 to 9.0:1] and brought the extra 9bhp, taking maximum power to 266bhp at 6250rpm, torque output remained at 228lb/ft. The turbocharger [TD05H-16G6-7] and exhaust system also received attention to give better response, while two water spray jets were employed on the intercooler instead of just one.

'Car Graphic' magazine compared the Evolution III with the latest Impreza WRX Type RA STi. Despite the Evolution III being close to the self-imposed Japanese production car limit of 276bhp, the Subaru now had the upper hand on power and torque output, yet still had a price advantage on the GSR.

However, the Mitsubishi was still the fastest, recording a 0-60mph time of 4.9 seconds [0.4 seconds faster than the Impreza]. The two ultimately battled neck and neck in the WRC and the showrooms.

Do the EVO 1,2's and 3's have the really short service intervals like the 5,6,7 and 8's?

No.

The short service intervals came about when the AYC system was fitted, Evo 4 onwards.

For the earlier Evos 1-3, the service interval is 6,000 miles (or 6 months) with a recommended intermediate oil change every 3,000 miles. The major cam belt service comes around at 40,000 miles.

The Evo 4 onwards should be serviced every 4,500 miles (or 6 months) with more major service intervals every 9,000, 18,000 and 45,000 miles (cam belt). Each 4,500 service should include the changing of the AYC fluid (GSR) as well as the normal oil and filter change.

Looks are in the eye of the beholder, if we all liked the same thing, we would all be chasing the same women eh?

They aint pretty, true but its a case of form follows function and when you are driving it you are probably having too much fun to care and you dont have to look at it when your in it !

If you are that bothered about 'style' buy a TT

Indeed, looks are in the eye of the beholder.

Still a damned ugly motor, though.

I'm not slagging it because they're fine cars. My cleaner's one ugly woman but she hoovers the house like a dream and I wouldn't dream of getting rid of her
