Folks the warranty on my ATR expiers this week, and i feel that I should renew it, any ideas as to which company or orgainsation to go with, bearing in mind that I want the car looked at by Honda only....Honda UK want £290 for a years warranty..is that too much???

I would say YES!!!!!
Friend of mine 99 Accord type R full honda service history without warning (no warning lights no temp increase no noise) had its big end let go!!!!
Out of warranty he's looking at a 3500 repair bill Honda are saying it his fault!!!!!!!!!!!
He checks oil every 3 weeks and has had all work done by Honda.
Their get out is that oil should be checked every time the car is filled with petrol!!! Personally I think that's a touch much but thats their excuse.
I also found out that Honda reckon it's acceptable that their cars can use 1ltr of oil every 600miles!!!!!!!!! CHRIST ARE WE IN THE DARK AGES!!!!!!
Anyway I'll stop ranting now but just thought I would mention yes the warranty is probably a good idea.

I thought Honda' were suppposed to be super reliable. Didn't Jeremy Clarkson say on Top Gear that Honda had built 15 million Vtec engines and not one had had a failure? Hmmm.....
Anyway £295 is good value for an extended dealer warranty IMO.

Yeah I thought that too.....
I think when Clarkson said it he worded it in a way that didn't say they had not had any engine failure can't remember the exact words though.
Also a guy I work with had a prelude 2.2 vtec that blew up so the super reliable thing has well and truly gone from my mind.....

ITR and ATR engines are pretty good actually. Not many issues at all, considering the fact that they are ~100pk/litre. The S2000 engines had far more issues (no. 4 cylinder gone due to lack of lubrication from oil injector or something like that). On the ATR the biggest problem is the syncro's on 3th and 5th gear. Mine is having this problem now and I'm trying to get the dealer to fix it as a courtesy since the car has only 27000 km....car is 6 months out of factory warranty now so I'll have to keep my fingers crossed untill I hear their verdict tomorrow.
Cheers.

Get the Honda warranty - it may be expensive but for peace of mind it is worth every penny.
£290 is a small price to pay compared to over £3K that I had to pay for an engine rebuild when my ITR let go.

You need to take what Clarkson says with a pinch of salt. No Vtec failures out of 15million engines? Rubbish.
What Honda stated was that they had no Vtec failures in their units during the original warranty period. After that? God Knows.
Anyway, I think an extended main-dealer warranty is always a safe option. Especially for under £300! BMW quote just under £500 for M series cars.
Apparently the gearboxes on Accord Type R's can let go too. I'd hate to think of the price of any new Honda gearbox!

thanks for the replies folks....
ok I've just come back from honda...went to ask for policy details.....apparently the Honda Warranty does not cover 'investigation time'....for example if the gear box goes and it takes say 4 hours to investigate I would have to pay for that!!! Surley that's not correct procedure...is it????

Well i took out an extended warranty on my ATR when the manufactures one ran out and have never been billed for any warranty related work be it fault finding or rectification (Hondacare extended warranty)
That includes wheel bearing replacement, 5th gear synchro replacememnt and a dodgy lambda sensor that was causing pinking
All of these involved diag time that was covered under the warranty.
