what current hot hatches/ sports cars would retain most value after 3 years from buying new and therefore if more expensive to start with than their rivals would still be worth shelling out the extra at the start if you get my drift.

I'd reckon on anything from the big three German manufacturers - BMW, Mercedes or Porsche. Especially Porsche - for example 7 year old Boxsters go for about £15K - £18K which is astounding when they were £34K new!

The way my Toyota's looking I doubt I'll be able to sell after three years. Looks like it will in for a full respray soon as the quality of paintwork is beyond words. Oh and when I complained the dealer told me to sue or f**k off !!!!

It's percentages. A 911 might lose 10% in a year, which is great, but that's still 10k. An S2000 might lose 5K, which is 20%, but still 5k less than the porsche. Over 3 years it's always German then Japanese cars which hold their money. German cars cos they wear the miles well and Japs cos they don't break. Mini is a good recommendation though, the 5 year TLC and warranty package plus good residuals make it a good long term proposition.

The Boxster is evidently the slowest depreciating car on sale in the UK but beware. A new 2.7 maybe £35k with the nice toys and a dealer will sell an 01 (51) of the same spec and 10k miles for say £31k - looks like good news. But as has been said, such are the margins at the stealership, the owner of the older car would have probably been offered £27k - thats a £8k or 23% depreciation which is on par with many other cars.
I have been through all of this as I'm trying to sell my Boxster on. Looked at a few s/hand S2000s and the values seem pretty strong once the initial depreciation has been knocked off.
