Question

Anyone know what the verdict was on these limited editions, any better than the 150 Bhp model ? or still very lardy.......

Cheers........

I`ve had a quick go in one and I liked it. If you like Mk4 Golfs (and few people on here do, R32 aside) then you`ll like the 25th AE.
Remember, VW also do a 180bhp GTI which will be a fair bit cheaper than the limited edition car. The 20th AE has a few nice goodies on it (Recaro`s, 18" BBS alloys, aluminium interior trim etc) which generally makes it a nice place to be. The prices on the 20th AE are quite firm too. They also did the 20th AE in 150 bhp TDI trim too, they really do hold their value.

I used to have a Golf GTI 1.8T as a company car. Got bored with the 150bhp very quickly, so got the car superchipped to 180bhp.

That gave the car the power and torque it should've had in the first place.

After that I drove a bugeye WRX which I can honestly say would have had one hell of a problem trying to outrun the Golf on the "autobahn" (both topped out at an indicated 150mph on the flat on trips across Europe).

Would have been a different story on the twisties though....

No ball of fire, but seems to go quite well. Very well put together, although there is a problem with the BBS wheels flaking.

Don't buy a petrol Golf!!!! The Diesels are far superior...I've got a 130 TDI which is quicker than a petrol 150...I'm only selling mine (for a Scoob) cos I don't do the mileage and want 4 wheel drive (standard GTI handling is a bit pants). The fourm www.uk-mkivs.net is a good place to start...

150 BHP 1.8 T would not be beaten by a 120BHP diesel!!

My old 1.8T was sposed to have better suspesnsion than my previous 1.8 GTi but both were crap in all honesty, really did not inspire any confidence in cornering. However my scoobs seems to be up for it !!

The 150 and 180 petrols are the same engine. Both can be remapped by Jabba Sport to around 230bhp for around £475.

The Skoda Octavia RS and Seat Leon Cupra are a better drive.

Chipping varies depending on year and engine code... 230+bhp IS possible on a 2001 onwards car.

Mine is a 1999 non drive by wire car (i.e. has a throttle cable) and these don't chip so well... Mine with APR 95RON program came out with 185BHP and 217lb/ft. The torque makes it a much nice car to drive as it pulls so much stronger.

I have yet to try it on the 98RON program, which should push out a few extra HP, but nothing amazing I wouldn't imagine!

I think you will find that my car has FAR more than 120 bhp - Some of the diesels manage a 0-60 in about 7 1/2 secs (not amazing I'll agree, but for a diesel...). BTW the power figures VW quote are very understated...standard 150s are more like 165 - 170 bhp - my diesel was (is??) packing 170 bhp with a tuning box along with just short of 300lb/ft of torque...no dodgy claims - try one and see...everyone seems to have a bad word to say about the diesel Golf, when in reality (for what it is) its great - I'd run one as a second car if I could have afforded to...The main problem is the handling - wallow like a barge, lift a rear wheel and understeer like crazy - plus really numb steering.

Sorry I meant 130 Tdi as per your original post, thought that was a direct reference to the BHP. If your car was producing 170 then I'm sure it would beat 1.8 T

Would aggree that the Diesels are preferable to the Petrols, have driven all except the 150 and in 90% of circumstances the Diesels are quicker as the performance is so low down you dont need to change gear, its not like the petrol engines have much character anyway so you may as well get the diesel. Even the 100 BHP I drove was impressive as they all have similar torque outputs regardless of the BHP figure at about 230 llbs ft and that is what you feel, it did run out of steam at the top end quicker than the 130 bhp.

Thumbs up

I would agree that the standard PD power figures are on the low side.

The new Fabia vRS has the PD130 engine, the first 3 on the dyno have measured between 140 and 145bhp with around 240lbft of torque all with less than 5000miles on them.

For £365-£425 your looking at 190bhp and 320lbft of torque.

Cool

I have a v6 4motion as a runabout, which is quicker than the GTi I think - and it is a great little car, as big as a van in ther back and nippy enough to enjoy. BUT...

It is no scooby...or any other decent performance car for that matter. As a second car it is ideal, or as a London car, but don't expect any real thrills or Karma from it - it is simply what it says on the tin - a fast hatchback, end of.
