I may have some extra cash to spend on some toys shortly.. What are they really like, are there any massive surprises to be had when it all goes **** up. What sort of stuff to look for, i seem to recall someone on here had one of these?
Looking at something like 85 - 89 3.2 Carrera.
Is there a better year for engines...... , i think they were all galvanized as well at this stage weren't they??
Insurance on a 3.2 carerra is not much more than my Impreza Sport , I've allways wanted one, and love the look, the sound.. everything.
Just exploring some options

As you are not getting much response, suggest you try same question on Pistonheads. com (Porsche Forum). Also flat-6.net and rennnlist.com. They are great cars and sound much better with a sports exhaust.

Is that the SC model?
Pretty sure they are galvanised, so you won't have to worry about the body work rotting. Very reliable if properly maintained; network of specialists can undercut main agent prices, though full Porsche history adds to value.
Day-to-day commuting is no problem if service schedule is followed, generally porker engines are bullet proof. Exciting / fun car to drive; older ones (especially Turbo) have rather scary handling; Carrera I think is easier to tame. All I think are prown to oversteer so you might be waving at the spoiler quite alot!
Awesome acceleration, razor sharp throttle response; lovely sound.
Just do a bit of research to see when they're suppose to be service, check and double check it's had proper servicing, plenty of reciepts, ideally porker dealer as well. Maintence is the key with second hand cars as long as it's been looked after when it was suppose to of been, you shouldn't have too many problems with it.

I've owned a 3.2 and a 964...
IMHO - your better off with a 3.2 - make sure it has the G50 gearbox rather than the 915 its generally stronger and better.
The engine is strong - needing a top end overhaul by approx 100000 miles. New clutches by 70-100k (£1k)... and geometry can be expensive to set up.
The thing though with these cars is that they are getting OLD - and bits wear out if you start using them daily. The engine can be a pain to tune with emissions and most of the sensors will begin to need replacing. They are difficult to mod - you'll be lucky to get the quoted 224 BHP at this age.
I've got plenty more advice - email me if you want a lengthy reply

Agree with gastro about the G50 box, the older type is 4 speed and WILL pi55 you off.
Fuel pumps can be a source of much problem and piston rings are prone to fail as oil seeps past while its sitting in the garage.
Generally all the eletrics are medieval and if you saw a house that had stuff that looked similar you'd rewire!!!
But still fantastic looking/sounding toys!

I have a buying guide from 911 and Porsche World on the 3.2. It's a couple of years old, but pretty good. If you want a copy mail me your address and I will post it to you.

All the usual rules of second-hand cars apply, but by a factor of 10! Do plenty of homework. See and drive lots of cars; there are still some good ones out there. You've just got to be prepared to upkeep the car and give it TLC when it needs it – which will be often.
Got my '89 3.2 at the weekend. Am now resident on cloud 911!!

Post 87 3.2 Carrera Sport is the one to go for imho.
I have an 89 Carrera Sport cab and while I love it to bits, I wish now (5 years later) I had a tin top.
Actually I want one of each!
(and I still have to think about where the "r's" go in Carrera )

The Porka is bvery reliable if maintained properly. I have had two one a 1977 2.7 and recently a 1985 3.2, both were a joy to drive and very entertaining. The sound of the flat six is beautiful, and the amount of attention you get is gr8.
The post 1984 cars are the ones to go for as there were revisions, the main one being the engine, plus suspension, torsion bar, brakes, hydraulic lifters. The post 1986 cars had the G50 box fitted so these will be priced a little more but worth every penny.
Things to look out for, drive it and see, the engine should rev freely, check the clutch, gearbox make sure it doesnt crunch, and very important check underneath for rust and look the underneath of the engine for any oil leaks. Leaks are coimmon but if it is poring out then leave alone. Brakes will need to be worked in order to achieve good breaking.
They are good to drive and are cheap to run. Europarts stock all the parts and there are loads of scrappers. 24 miles to the gallon is what the 3.2 should achieve.
Best of luck.

Thanks for all the advice, some interesting stuff, it's really starting to seem like a viable option. I'm used to old motors, not worried about any labour costs, and the parts seem fairly cheap if anything goes belly up.
What sort of money are the post 86 (g50 box) going for, and any advice as to where to look for them, doesn't seem to be many about on autotrader.
Gastro- got any pics of yours?
Cheers

911 and Porscheworld magazine, which can be bought from W.H.Smiths.
For a post 1986 price can be from 12500 upwards. Depends on condition and history. DONT buy left hand drive versions, because when it comes time to sell you will be struggling.
Sorry not hyd lifters but hydraulic cam tensioners.

Just out of interest, there was a 1983 911 SC in my local paper yesterday ( I know it is earlier than you are looking for, but. It has had 2 owners and done a genuine 49K miles apparently. He wanted 10950 ono. Just mentioning it as the mileage is incredably low!

I wouldnt say that - they are not cheap to run - don't be under any illusion of such a thing..
