I'm pretty sure I'll take a test drive, but I'm more certain I'll buy a 350Z (or another Scoob). I'm not sure I could live with the drop in performance the RX8 will give.

Cheers

Thanks Richard; you're on! Mind, if the UK version's the same as the import I had the test drive in, then spin may be the operative word...

Exclamation

I personally wouldn't!!

Apparently they have a real problem with oil thurst!!!

Warranty claims have been plentiful + Mazda have been trying to claim negligence on behalf of the owners for not checking the levels 2-3 times a week :O

I believe that there is some tabloid gumph knocking about regarding this issue, so you might want to seek further advice!!

Good luck but I'd get a Nissan 350Z for that sort of money

RX8 is much nicer looking than the Fat Assed Nissan with the stupid rear boot strut. Its not exactly slow at 6ish secs 0-60, not that far behind the Z, plus its much more useable, much nicer interior, and I'm sure they are already working on the turbo upgrade for it, then it will destroy the Nissan

Also of note, in the coupe class (i think)in Evo they award the RX8 the top honours, with the Nissan featuring as just a recommended.

saw one in the flesh at Jap performance day at santa pod & didnt look too bad
My understanding of the oil thing is if it's the same as a RX7 kinda thing then it is part of the rotary set up to burn oil to lube the seals n stuff nowt wrong with that as long as you dont let it run out!!!! But it's a bit unfair to blame the car for any owners lack of knowledge that's like blaming a Jap scoob engine for blowing up when you've run it on 95RON. Both damn good engines but u gora know how to use & treat them init
& i believe the unreliability of the apexi seals etc on the RX7 has been overcome on the 8, only time will tell i guess but relaibility shouldn't be shabby for the performance

Mark - agreed, but those kits really do look superb and actually stay with the lines of the car very nicely!

Neil, from what I've read about the RX8 you have to rev the nuts off it to get anywhere

The Zed is about as useable a you can get...any gear, any speed it'll pull. Check out the in-gear times in this weeks Autocar

Don't rate Autocar, Top Gear not too bad but I think Evo tends to be more what us as drivers would say than the others.

Bas,

Revvy - which a lot of other cars are also like too these days, like the Honda Type R engines and the Toyota VVTi engines, but they are widely accepted, it depends on what you like to do and adapting your driving style!

As for useable, I wasn't refering to the engine mate (as agree that the Zed's is), I meant the car itself on the whole is more useable, boot space, 4 seater etc.......

Not having a pop at the Zed but Mark will tell you I prefer the RX8 by quite some margin, but thats not saying the Zed is a bad car, its not its just the RX is what I personally prefer!!!

Don't rate Autocar
Whilst I don't buy the mag on a regular basis, they're due some respect. I've worked with quite a few motorings mags and journalists, and the folk at Autocar know what they're doing.

As for Evo, I wasn't aware they'd tested the car and published the results yet - unlike Autocar. I guess it'll be in next month's issue.

Cheers

Sorry mate, I mis-interpreted your comments. I do agree though that the Zed could do with some top end fizz as it doesn't *feel* that fast.

I could have had either, but my personal preference is the RX-8.

I believe it looks way cooler (much better in the flesh than in pics), it is much nicer inside, is unique with suicide doors, rear seats and the rotary engine reving to over 9k, has a really high standard spec, and is fantastic value.

It might not be as quick in a stright line as the 350Z, but Im past that, and by all accounts the handling and ride are superb. Ive had two test drives myself and love it.

As for motor mags, Evo, AutoExpress & WhatCar all rated it above the Z, where as Autoexpress and Topgear were the reverse. The 4car website also gives it 5* as do several others.

TopGear was a funny one as it was basically a straight line test in the US. Also weird in that Clarkson slated the 350Z on his programme.

EVO reviewed the RX-8 against the Golf R32, which is their favourite hot hatch which beat allcomers a few issues ago.

They gave them both 5* , but the RX-8 came out just on top, you can read the review here......

http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/?domain...y.php?id=39166

Ive had a few years of Impreza ownership but now its time for me to change. Im more than happy with my choice of the RX-8.

OK, my reasons for picking the Zed...

Each to his own I guess, but I prefer the looks of the Zed. It has a muscle car look that the RX8 doesn't. And for me, the side on view just doesn't look right whereas the Zed looks stunning from that angle.

I agree that straight line performance isn't the only factor and a few tenths on 0-60 times doesn't make much odds. But Autocar figured the Zed at 5.8 and the RX8 at 7.1 sec. That's a big difference.

Practicality and interior didn't really come into it for me so the extra seats of the RX8 don't matter.

OK I haven't driven an RX8 but I didn't want to get a car that you have to keep spinning at big revs to get anywhere. I used to have a CRX V-TEC and it was great fun but not very useable.

And having driven a Zed, it just felt right...the handling, the steering, the brakes. It felt like a sports car should.

So a Zed it is...and only 17 days to go

Bas just about sums up my feelings too.

I've seen 3 RX8s in the flesh and each time I see it, it looks wrong to me. Mind, I've never bought a car on looks alone. The 350Z to my mind, has no weak spots however. It looks stunning!

I've set a pic of it as wallpaper on the PC in my office at College. Everyone loves it, with the exception of the Fine Art lecturer, who drives a G Reg Honda Accord... He actually choked on his meat paste sandwich, when I told him how fast it would go. The three sexy, young, female Graphic Design lecturers, just went,

WOW!
Thankfully, it drives as well as it looks.

Cheers

PS To my knowledge, the only mag that's driven a UK spec 350Z, is Autocar. Maybe we should reserve judgement, until they all have? Better still, till we've all driven both the Zed and the RX8.
