Okay, it might just be time to get sensible and swap the Scooby. I've also got a Golf TDi 130, and was thinking of getting rid of them both and replacing with a Clio 172, and a "quality" diesel.
Which of the following has anybody had any experience of, and which would you recommend?
Audi A4 Avant 2.5 TDi (quattro if it exists)
BMW 330d Touring (Sport or SE?)
Mercedes C270 CDI Estate
Ta.

Mungo,
I'd have to say go for the BMW if you're after a refined diesel. I have had 2 and am awaiting delivery of my third one later this week. There really is nothing in the diesel world to touch the characteristic 3 ltr lump in the 330d. I have had Sport models in the last and for the better seats alone they're worth it!
The Audi 2.5 TDI is very rattly in comparison to either the Merc or BM. The 5 cylinder Merc does pull well, and I've been in a C270CDI. If has a nice gruff engine/exhaust note, but overall build quality not up to BMW or Audi. The Audi is arguably the best built of the three. The dynamics of the Merc aren't up to much either.
I'd go BMW, Audi and then Merc if I had the choice. 2nd hand versions of all of the above can be had for £17k-£whatever and they all hold their value well. The BMW is the cheapest to service if that's important. Intervals tend to be every 12k miles on all 3.
Cheers
Matt

I looked into all these just over a year ago, in the end I went for a Audi Avant A4 1.9 (130bhp) TDI Sport as the best value for money, the 2 wheel drive makes it faster than the quattro version. The 2.5 TDI didn't seem that much faster on the road!
I liked the Merc the best but it was some £8k more expensive than the Audi!

greg

Audi A4 2.5TDi 180 Quattro Tiptronic is fantastic, great diesel although your only gonna get 27 to 39mpg! Had one when my S3 went in for a service. I don't know about the manual but I leathered the one I had it really did move well! The mpg would probably improve when you drive sensibly (instead of crusing way over 120mph)
But the Audi is the ONE to go for! Don't like BMW image personally and unless your over 65 (no offence anyone) you can't drive a Merc diesel plus you have to think your better than everyone!
Not that I'm slightly biased!

I picked up a 330D sport manual last week and love it. The engine noise in the car just sounds like a standard BMW straight 6.
Mine is the 204BHP versions so has got a fair amount of go and piles on speed at an amazing rate, it just doesnt feel like it is so using the cruise control is a must....Its also returning over 44mpg on my journey to work which includes about 40% town driving.

I was lucky enough to only have to wait 5 days as the dealer had a canceled order in the colour I wanted. I wasnt bothered about the manual or auto but it had a manual box so that was fine by me, also had black leather, heated seats and a few other bits and pieces. The only thing I would have liked was the Harmon Kardon speaker upgrade, but suppose I can do my own upgrade later.

Sounds great Steve.
Mine's Silver Grey with Black Nappa. I've got SatNav, HK, Bluetooth, Xenons etc etc. Gone for the manual too. The auto is good, but I prefer 3 pedals in my cars!
Hope that you enjoy it as much as I'm going to enjoy mine!

Same colour rather nice it is as well.....do like the revised alloys and the 5 year serice package is rather nice. I've got the standard leather, heated seats, lumbar support, Xenons, cd changer, rear airbags and 3rd point seatbelt.

1.9 TDI PD130 engines with extended servicing manage 18-20K miles between servicing and so are areguably the cheapest of all in running costs. With Quattro you get the best of all worlds.

The new 3.0 Litre 204BHP engine has an improved service interval distance of around 20-25K depending on driving etc, mind you it also has a 5 year service pack included in the price so I reckon that makes it pretty cheap to maintain

Have you tried the Mondeo 1.8 td with an endura engine, "THEY ARE FECKING CRAP". I get approx 33 mpg, and when its fully loaded with passengers going up hill, you nearly start doing a fred flint stone. I have my own taxi company and I'll never touch a ford again...Next quality diesel I'll be getting is a peugeot 406 hdi 110 bhp.
