Just been poking about on the audi sport forums, I see that some of their cars have been chipped by AMD, producing 320bhp and 400+ft lbs torque
Now I love audis, build quality is fantastic, but I know next to nothing about the S4
The S4 is on my list for my next purchase, I know they lack a little in driver involvement but I am looking for a swift confortable car for the winter months.
What can you tell me?

What do you want to know?
I've got one. Mine is standard, so only 265bhp & 295lbs/ft ;-)
Still pretty quick, doesn't handle as well as a scoob in standard form, but build quality and interior are in a different league!
Very understated looks - great Q car.
As you have seen, a basic remap will get around 320bhp & 390lbs/ft. Add a full Milltek exhaust and you'll get a bit more. Or you can go for upgraded turbos and get 400bhp!!!
Try doing a search - Jeff Wiltshire has recently gone for the full upgraded turbo conversion and I'm sure he posted here about it.
Also, have a look at http://www.rs246.com for more info
cheers,
Andy

Haven't been in an S4 but I know someone with an RS2 and its a cracking car. Obviously getting on a bit now but they're all generally well loooked after. Seriously quick and amazing handling. Basically a Porsche with an Audi shell on....if the S4 is remotely like it then it must be a good car.

Someone called .....
Mine is running 395 BHP & 480 lb/ft with the AmD K04 conversion.
http://www.rs246.com is your best bet for more info.
Generally they are fast sporty cars in standard form but are not a M3 challenger out of the box. The later 4.2 cars are mean't to be much closer in nature the latest M3. The 2.7 V6 twin turbo is a pretty unstressed unit in standard form (265 BHP) and cope well with a chip change from AmD, APR, REVO, MTM etc giving around 320 BHP. The problem arears are the MAF which gets contaminated, Dump valves leaking and the Throttle Body Boot (TBB) which splits. Most of them seem to require a turbo change at 50-60K ish which is an engine out job (£3200 from an Audi dealer) and this is what happened to mine (bad MAF & center box collapsed = dead turbo) and I went for the K04 upgrade and new complete Milltek exhaust.
Cheers
Jeff

BTW, AMD currently have a 400bhp S4 (i.e. full K04 conversion) for sale, only £13,500. It does have 114,000 miles on it, but it's alot of performance for the ££££s!

jeff, as i said, no offence to s4 owners but... he did ask for opinions, and i gave him my honest one. i have no doubt there are people here who wouldnt have an m3 if you gave 'em one, i wouldnt be offended by that, its their choice

like what? an s4?
perhaps the new s4 is better than the old one. i dunno, never tried one. rumour of an rs4 with v8 and twin turbos sounds interesting, depends how much they want for one i spose.
isnt the old s4 based on the mk3 golf?

OK....no offence Spudgun but your talking out of your ****...
See how the use of 'no offence' makes that statement OK.
The old S4 is not, nor ever was, based on the Mk 3 Golf...which just goes to prove my first statement...but no offence eh

Spud,
Just out of interest,
Why did you buy it if it was so bad?
Did you drive it before you bought it (I always find a good test drive helps make up my mind)?
What went wrong in three weeks to turn a car you wanted into a car you despised?
Just curious, that`s all.

hi jeff
i was always under the impression that the old a4 was based on a golf platform. perhaps im wrong. mind you, at least it would have explained the appalling handling
simon
numerous electrical gremlins, seats that after an hours use resulted in the need for a chiropracter, handling that was laughable. i needed to do the deal quick and the things that p1ssed me off didnt show up in a 20min test drive. it was a lesson learnt.
chrisp.
try to buy ONE car that is better in EVERY way than an e46 m3

I ran a standard MY99 for about 4 months. The standard leather seats I found comfortable but completely unsupportive...you can't retro-fit the alcantara seats through Audi, you'd need to find some at a breakers or fit something completely different. The brakes and steering offered close to no feedback.
It was a very comfortable motorway basher but as standard was comlpetely unfullfilling as a drivers car IMHO.
Preferred the S3 I had 3 cars later.

Thanks for all the responses guys, very helpful as per.
I have pretty much decided that I am going to go for an E36 M3 Evo, same/superior build as the S4, more power (as standard), RWD, more toys etc....
Thanks again!
