Why I will not be buying a Boxster
#1
I can't believe what I have just experienced.
Just got back from getting the tyres changed on the Audi, I needed a couple of new fronts so pitched up early before opening. There was a guy in a Boxster also waiting so I got chatting to him for obvious reasons.
Not wishing to bore anyone, what a jumped up **** of an individual, completely full of himself and obviously really thought he was the mutts nuts
I am not one to court aggro so I just smiled and nodded, as you do. Anyway once they'd opened up I have never seen anyone speak down to people quite the way this guy did. I thought what a c*nt!!, he was in the queue first so his car was on the ramp and I was standing in his vicinity
I think one of the guys was an apprentice as he was taking a little longer over the job than you might expect and needed some assistance from one of the more experienced hands. Anyway this Boxster chap said "oh can't they employ people who know what they are doing, it's hardly rocket science taking a wheel off and changing a tyre!", this is all within earshot of the guys there
again I'm not into aggro so just walked away from him as I didn't want to appear that he was anything to do with me
Once he'd gone and my car was being looked at I had a word with the younger guy and said not to worry about idiots like that
The older guy chimed in and said it was no worries as they know to expect this kind of thing from owners of certain types of car
It's making me wonder if this is the kind of image I am happy to be associated with, I am not certain that it is

I still aspire to a Porsche to be honest but the image thing does bother me. I'm not sure about the S2000 to be honest, not really into revving the nuts off things
I really wanted a Boxster but this experience has put me off somewhat, I'd hate to turn up somewhere and before I'd even got out of the car get pre-judged as a c*nt just because I was driving a Boxster

Sound like one of those lar-de-dars who buy the car because its a Porsche and nothing else, like the ones who buy BMW's 'cos they are BMW's. You get the odd scooby driver like that too But they are so up their own ***** they are never on scoobynet
Don't let to55ers like that dictate what you drive.
Anyhoo, you'd get more respect if you had an late 80's 911... you don't get those type driving them anymore. More fun to drive too IMO

I've been starting to think maybe the Boxster is a bit 'wannabe' anyway. Looking through Top Marques the 964 version of the 911 is looking relatively cheap and I could get a cheap car for everyday use and a 964 with higher mileage and use for occasional use
964's must be getting into classic status now so all the posers will have moved on to other things

Do they expect highlights, trim and a blow dry form S2000 drivers?
Seriously though, the Boxter is a great car. Why are people so worried about this image thing? IMHO its the peopl who sterotype car owners that have the 'issues'.
The Boxter driver was a ***. But not because he owns a Boxter, and he didn't buy a Boxter because he is a ***. He will be arrogant whatever he drives, as I am sure he was before he had that car, and he will be after he has the car.

I've been driving a boxster this week and have had loads of **** from people in other cars at lights/in queues etc.
Everyone from mr.Co.Car in his Vectra GSI (new) to some kids in an MGB GT have tried to race me, have been given the finger and abuse too.
I was quite shocked as the only car (have driven many porsches and a couple of boxsters before with no bother) i've been in before to get that kind of reaction from people is an M3. What i put it down to is the fact this boxster is Red, and only has 16" wheels. Sounds silly but i think when people see it, the red makes them think, oh yeah, poser, show off(esp with roof down), and then they see the little wheels and think, oh its only a 2.5, i'll do him kind of thing. The other boxsters i've driven have both been silver, with 17 or 18s on and one was an 's', the other only a 2.5 but fully specced with sports exhaust, suspension etc so they didnt get the attention (how many silver ones are there, i dont even notice them half the time now!) and if people did se them they assumed them to be an 's' and not worth trying to race....

interesting
ive owned three beemers in the past and im getting my fourth bmw tomorrow, an m3.
ive just sold my evo, before that i had an r33, before that 2 scoobies. as far as im concerned, the m3 is owned by two different types. the enthusiast who's just moved on from something else, or a yuppie type.
do i care what people think of me? nope! they probably thought i was a *** when i was in one of my jap cars anyway
what exactly does a fat 40 year old guy in a subaru jacket and a baseball cap driving round in a lurid blue scooby with gold wheels and fukk off big wing on the back look like to most people not cool, to be honest
so fukk what people think or what you think theyre thinking, just buy the car you love, or you'll never be happy with anything else.

Bottom line folks - you shouldn't stereotype people based on the cars they drive.. it's very narrow minded.
There are nice people on this planet, and there are cvnts - and what car they drive makes no odds.
I would never act like a lemming and let other peoples judgements/experience sway what I want to drive
IMHO

Well said WWSD!
I've been given the finger once when driving round town in a boxster, some kid on the footpath just wanted to act hard to his mates.
The 911 (996) attracts even more attention. When filling up at petrol stations, some people just stare! Maybe it's not everyday they see a 28 year old (in jeans and T shirt) with a carrera but sometimes it's too much. I am certainly not a snob, nor could I be considered arrogant. Sweeping generalisations are generally a bad thing when judging a person based on the car they drive!

Nice to see BMW ownership hasn't tainted your opinion of Scooby owners

I get a lot of grief in my 996. More than in the Boxster S I had before.
Always get raced, always get cut-up & never get let out of junctions...used to it now.
I dont drive like an idiot either drawing attention to myself.

Maybe the guy getting his tyres donw was mycroft?
He said he was getting a boxtser for the summer
His cr@p attitude to the tyre boys (along with everyone else) might explain his EIGHT blowouts

finally I got to follow an S2000 today, f*ck me is that really a Honda????
I was in the Audi A4 1.8T quattro and followed this S2000 onto the onslip I think he was booting it, I certainly was I was reeling him in then just as I ran out revs, he was off!!! Not sure if he was gunning it as there was no squat under power but it certainly looked impressive
I caught up with it and had a shufty around it and thought mmmm, maybe I should test drive one
It definately seemed to have some degree of poke once on the move but I was all over it from a standing start to around 30mph

HumptyDumpty - you ran out of revs and it's at that point where the S2000 just get's going up to 9000rpm. and the 5-9000rpm band is where most it's horses are. Not much keeps up with me in mine if I keep it in that vtec zone. If you test one, make sure you rev it ALL the way to the redline in as many gears as you can

glad i made a few chuckle
tiggers
what i was trying to get across was that to us (scoobynetters/enthusiasts) is that a middle aged guy driving a scooby is a fella who enjoys his car/passion and doesnt care what people think.
but to jo bloggs in his passat/citroen/whatever, hes a *** trying to relive his youth.
now whats important here is for the thread starter to NOT be put off buying a car just because of peoples impressions of the car and indirectly him. most of it is jealousy by people with **** motors, some of it is just b0ll0cks.
i love scoobys, i love evos's (especially evos) and im going to the pod on sunday as an m3 driver, but even more so, as a fast car enthusiast. see what i mean?
oh, and yes i'll still race any ****** who trys it on on the way up there, but then again, i wouldve in the evo too (except i'd have won in the evo)
happy motoring all, in whatever spins yer props

Spudgun VI,
I know what you meant, I was just doing a bit of reverse stereotyping for a bit of fun.
Your description of the average Scooby driver was damned funny and all I need is the Subaru apparel and I'm right there except I KNOW I don't look cool

Don't worry, I'm pretty sure the garage would have charged this d1ckhead appropriately to the size of his wallet.
It always pays to have a bit of banter with the staff, tell them how much you sacrificed to get the car, what the running costs are, and they always do a good deal.
They openly admit that if you just turn up in a Porker or Beemer, chuck the keys and shout fix that and don't scratch it, they charge well over the odds because the owner can easily afford it and won't bother shopping around for a comparison. In fact for these suited saddo's the fact that your tyres cost over £200 a corner is a good bragging point down the wine bar They think it's great

The Boxster being one of the lowest depreciating cars in Britain means that the actual cost of ownership is much less than many other cars that certainly don't get their owners tagged with this stereotypical nonsense. Also, most people with an interest and knowledge of cars will know if their dealer is fobbing them off with duff work - I would assume the percentage of owners who know nothing about cars is greater with the mass market makes than the specialist ones.
My experience is that the dealer is more likely to stiff you if they know a lease company is footing the bill than how much your car cost new.
Why don't people point at drivers of Omega 3.0 Elites, Vel Satis and Peugeot 607 V6 drivers and say "flash git - look how much money that guy can afford to tip down the toilet by buying some shed that depreciates like a piano being dropped off a cliff?".
