A3 3.2 Quattro?

No demo's yet, didn't see much point in trying a 2.0 diesel. Looking at January-Feb for delivery, haven't got a build date yet. Looks good value compared to the outgoing R32 and stuff like Beemer 330's or even 325 compacts.

How can you possible say that when A) you've not driven both B) Performance is nearly identical 0-60 in 6.5 and both limited to 155mph... explain your logic please....

I doubt there's much in it. The Audi has a wee bit more power and is a 12-pack of lager lighter, it's also good for over 160mph without the limiter, so that will do just fine for me.
Plus I could only just get a 1 or 2 year old 330 Sport for £25k.
Also the image of the Audi (IMHO) is only 87% on the t0sser scale vs. 99% for the BM.
I would expect the BM to have better steering feel, it's not 4wd after all and Audi's always get slagged for dull steering, but I don't really care, I've got the Mrs's Cooper for that and I quite fancy 4wd for the lovely Scottish winter.
Can't get a test drive of the A3 yet so as the previous poster said, there's nothing to compare against.

I wish people would stop banging on about speed, I am not refering to how fast it is. Have had quite a few Audi's, a couple of S3's, and they all feel wooden.
Reading all the motoring press, Audi have not remedied this with the new A3.
Presently have a 330ci Sport, and it's handling is in a different league, very fluid and controled with good feedback through the chassis. NO Audi of recent years bhas been able to sort out the wooden chassis' and crap steering.
I am not going to get into another "BMW's are ****e" debate again (just read the motoring press to prove my point), but until Audi start setting up thier cars better, or convert to RWD, They will never be the drivers choice.
The fact that a car has similar performance does not make up for this.

I agree with you - which is why I said this
But why have you bought so many Audi's including "a couple of S3's" if you hate the steering that much? The 3-series has been around in various forms for ages after all.

I still really enjoyed them, the S3's were modified and good fun (and bloody quick), but if I had driven my current car (although it wasn't out then) around the time I bought the S3's, I wouldn't have bought them.

Or should that be - is that another pathetic attempt to boost RWD cars ?
Not at all. A straightforward question to someone who has clearly been used to driving quickly and enjoys his 330 <fair play> but does it handle as well when its slippy ?
Not much wrong with that question is there ? Touchy

That's the problem with 4wd cars and owners nowadays - they get so used to the security blanket of 4wd that when faced with a challenge or emergency involving sliding/skidding etc on slippery roads, they haven't got a clue, whereas rwd owners take it in their stride.
4wd is the root of all driving evil

Wish you guys would stop going on about speed and handling as if that was the be all & end all of workshy's decision (or anyone elses!).
Other things come into buying decisions :
- price
- depreciation
- comfort
- equipment
- brand image
- other cars in your own stable
etc etc
I'm absolutely sure that workshy has decided on the Audi after careful consideration of his OWN needs, not yours, nor anyone elses!!!

"believe me, a 330 will **** all over it, go and test one."
You haven't even driven one and its the new mk5 Golf chassis so your S3 experiance isn't mush use - talk about a stupid comment....define **** all over

I'm not too bothered about steering feel, I had an Esprit S2 for 3 days a couple of months back and the steering was totally sublime and even telepathic, you would think about the corner and realise you'd already done it, best steering ever, but it didn't stop it from being a complete bag o'shoite. Not that a 330 is a bag of, I just don't want one, and it's easily six grand more expensive.

Well the demonstrators are out now, had a shot today
It doesn't feel mad fast, one of those where you look at the speedo and realise how fast you're going, only had 70 miles the clock so more to come I suppose.
Handling was great, brilliant turn-in, tremendous grip and really fires out of the corners, loads of bottom end power, excellent throttle response.
Steering was fine, it doesn't feed back much driving in a straight line, but I don't need to feel every ripple going in a straight line. Once in a corner it weights up nicely. I even got a nice little bit of lift-off oversteer on a roundabout, the stability/traction control stuff is excellent, very unobtrusive. Err that's about it, it's got seats and buttons and that, possibly even a boot and an engine, though I didn't look at either.
Should get it in about ten days / 2 weeks time.
Even getting a bit of value for money out of the ludicrous £520 delivery charge, as they're gonna transporter it from Derby to Edinburgh which should cost 'em a couple of hundred quid or so
