Question

I seem to see a lot of these about.

Were they the forerunners of the ST220s and so on? Are they quick?

I like the fact they're very understated, save for the twin exhausts...

They don't have twin exhausts.

I currently have a '95 24v.

Not fast off the mark: 0-60 8 secs. It's the in-gear acceleration that's pretty good.

1st and second gears are crap, nothing happens in 2nd until 4k rpm but then it pulls.

3rd's good for a ton with 4th being the strongest gear.

It's more of a smooth, constant pull but it pulls all the way to the red line very well.

It will sit at 110mph all day long.

I get 38mpg on long runs and late 20s on normal running.

Same engine as the ST24 but detuned to 168bhp. More refined than fast, but once moving it'll keep up and pull away from a lot of cars with drivers that think you're in a standard rep car.

The only real give-away is the subtle 24v badged on the back.

Oh, and don't try to go around corners in it too fast - you'll end up in a hedge!

Made for the motorway.

Cheers for that.

They must have made two versions though, cos every one i've seen/noticed, has twin exhausts, one either end of the rear bumper, i'll 100% guarantee it. In fact it's that feature which usually makes me notice them in the first place...

ST24 and ST200 have twin pipes.

The 24v doesn't as standard.

Maybe they've fallen into the hands of the Max Power group?

My girlfriend's sister's boyfriends (?) has a '96 2 litre Mondeo. He's had all that ****e fitted, twin pipes, lowered, body kit, nice wheels, dvd player, laser warning stuff, etc.

My car's a battered runabout with 115k on the clock. Oh how I laugh as he rags the **** out of his car to just keep up as I'm not really pushing my shed.

Nope, totally totally standard, twin exhausts. Not a one-off either, many of them have them. Maybe it was the later versions? The one i saw today, prompting this thread, was as bog standard as you could have hoped for. Pootling along at 30mph, 24v badges, and twin exhausts poking out the back. N reg if i remember correctly.

Only ST200's have twin exhausts (and 220's). A twin exhaust conversion is popular with other v6 mondeo owners though. Just reminds me of a wheelbarrow though!

Odd setup that, only the ST200 and the ST220 (very new shape) have the twin exhausts as standard, there seem to be a lot of after market systems with twin pipes though.

V6 V6Si and ST24 are all the same power, again the ST200 and ST220 are more. The ST24 had a body kit, half leather, better stereo + sunroof as std over the Si, but both had "sports" (loosest possible sense) suspension when compared to the V6 Ghia

I've run a 97 car for 6 years now, does exactly as fatherpierre describes

Early Mk1 24v's (1994) had twin pipes, they were replaced in 96 with the mk2 which had a single exit on the right, as opposed to al other models whose exhaust was on the left.

Though there are mk1's with single pipes, just to confuse the situation

Thanks for that Cabinet Enforcer - at least i know i'm not going mad!!

Did Ford sell many of these? I don't remember hearing/reading a lot about them at the time. Maybe most of them have migrated to Essex..!!

I must admit to never seeing one with twins.

My pipes starting to blow a bit now, as it happens.

Might get a double to make it look more mean..........

Na, **** it.

Regarding the twin pipes, these were fitted as std to the ST24 cars, bear in mind that not all ST24 cars were fitted with the bodykits, it could be that you have seen a few 'naked' ST24s, these would have the twins.

Cheers

IIRC, the V6 engine was available (for the post-facelift model Mondeo) in the following forms

Ghia/Ghia X 1 pipe

Si (very rare) 1 pipe

ST24 2 pipes

ST200 2 pipes

Hope I'm correct on this. From personal experience I know that the Ghia & Ghia X models only had a single pipe.

According to the old brochure I've got a home from when I bought mine in 97 (i know I 'm a sad git) the ST24 had a single right hand exit oval pipe as well, it just sticks through the body kit.

So on faceleift 97 on cars Ghia, GhiaX, Si, St24 all single right hand exit oval pipe
ST200 when it came out was twin

Hat coat I'm gone, I'm depressed that I even looked.

Question

Which one is the fastest / best performance? ST24 0r ST200?

What's the BHP on both (Is the 200 for BHP???)

They do seem good value - only thing that puts me off is I've had a lot of Fords in the past and the dealers were always very poor.

Neil,

Nice try, but it was rare through lack of demand rather than lack of supply .......

The 24v is 168BHP I think.
The 200 in ST200 does indeed stand for 200BHP same for the 220.
